Song Sparrow (Melospiza melodia); photographed in the Dixon Prairie of the Chicago Botanic Garden (June 2018)
Very widespread in North America, this melodious sparrow is among the most familiar birds in some areas, such as the Northeast and Midwest. At times it is rather shy, hiding in the thickets, seen only when it flies from bush to bush with a typical pumping motion of its tail. Song Sparrows vary in appearance over their wide range, from large dark birds on the Aleutians to small pale ones in the desert Southwest.

Every day holds new magic
We'll meet in the woods as the pale branches collide with dusk and this will be the only thing we'll know of time.
Shed your tired shoulders the way nature always does. Breathe in the cooler air. The quiet light. The solid ground. The distant river. The rising wind. The ancient sun. The dream between us.
