Hard Lines
“Seen from one perspective, photography is much more about elimination than inclusion. The images we make with a lens typically eliminate eighty percent of our field of view and everything that is out of our field of view. The shutter slices time, eliminating all moments before and after it opens and closes. Three dimensions are reduced to two. And in some cases color is removed. Can we accurately call these kinds of artifacts unaltered? The act of creation is an alteration.” – John Paul Caponigro

Pristine

Nothing like grand mountains in Grand Teton National Park to keep one humble. An old photo from a National Park road trip.

I’ve always known that water is one of, if not the, most powerful element in the natural world. We see the beauty that water can create through glacially-carved mountains and the valleys and canyons sliced into the earth by rivers. We witness the terrible destructive nature of water through hurricanes, floods, and tsunamis.
-
It’s one thing to acknowledge the power of water on an intellectual level. It’s quite another to have a firsthand encounter with that power. And during my trip to Big Sur I experience both the wondrous handiwork of water and also its potential to devastate.
-
Due to storms in the Pacific the central California coast was facing unusually large swells while I was there. Huge, Hollywood movie waves were breaking and crashing onto the beaches and into the crags and rocks along the shore.
-
This image was taken at Soberanes Point in Garrapata State Park. I stood for about half an hour at this spot just watching the waves come in, making their way around, through, and over the rocks. I loved the lines that formed here and the ephemeral waterfalls created by the bigger waves that managed to summit these large rocks. And I really loved the drama created in the narrower parts that the water has been working its way through for who knows how long.
-
It was one of the more awe-inspiring times I’ve had while photographing. But there’s another side to water.
-
In my last post, what I didn’t mention was that my plan was to set up about 150 yards to my right. I thought there would be more interesting compositions over there, but the tide was coming in and it looked like there might be a spot where the tide would cut the beach off from where I wanted to be, stranding me among the rocks (it never did, but always trust your instincts!).
-
Another photographer decided to chance it. And then a rogue wave came in. It knocked him down and pulled him under, but thankfully he walked away with just soaked clothes (kind of a miracle given the rocks that were all around him). Oh and a destroyed $3500 camera. 😢

Iceland. On our way to Vik, we make a stop to see the Black Waterfall (Svartifoss) of Skaftafell. Its name stems from the hexagonal, black basalt columns rising around it, making it look like a giant crystal.
