Its Tuesday 5pm and I'm listening to @bbcwomanshour. There's a woman talking about her frustration with the wellness industry. This was the reason I had tuned in.
I've chosen to work in the wellbeing industry. The very one she was being critical of and I found myself agreeing with her. Of course there is nothing wrong with that in fact it was comforting and reassuring.
She explained that she felt weighed down by all the things that she was told she SHOULD do, by influencers and Instagram in particular, to keep mentally healthy. What she really wanted to do, she said, were the things she enjoyed; singing in a choir and her walking group. HALLELUJAH!!! I love this woman.
She's wise, astute and says it like it is. Doing things because we feel we should or because some expert (or not!!) has told us to, can lead to unhappiness, stress and misery. Her own choices meant she was enjoying herself and connecting with others. Her walking group made her happy and she felt uplifted from exercising outdoors. She didn't need someone to tell her what she should do. She knew what she enjoyed and she chose to do it.
I think we all get weighed down with the shoulds in life, I know I do. When I'm feeling mentally well I'm inspired by podcasts and the teachings of mindfulness teachers. When my mood dips I notice I'm listening to them because I feel I should, because I think they will make me feel better, because I think it will somehow earn me wellness. That's when I'm putting demands on myself and I dont experience any of those positive outcomes at all.
If you were to ask your self, "what do I enjoy doing?" How would you respond?
How might you fit that into your life?
Enjoy yourselves. I'm having a takeaway and watching football tonight.
That's what I enjoy YEEEES!!!😁. #itsoktobeyourself
