Although an often unwelcome summer visitor, wasps are very important pollinators. They also keep ecosystems in balance by feeding pest insects to their larvae! This species feeds on nectar from a variety of flowers and like all species of wasp, carry pollen on their heads or backs, often between their wings. Wasps are among a small handful of species that are responsible for pollinating the flowers of orchids. #pollinator #PhotoArk #wasp #pollinatingspecies

Weekend Hashtag Project: #WHP🌈
This weekend, we’re celebrating love, pride and the LGBTQ community with #WHP🌈.
Play with the ROYGBIV color spectrum. Create photos that incorporate the whole rainbow.
Find rainbows out in the world, whether they’re painted as a mural on a city wall or wrapped around a parade-goer at a local Pride celebration.
Create your own rainbows. Dress up in colorful outfits, paint rainbows on your eyelids or bake a colorful batch of cookies.
PROJECT RULES: Please add the #WHP🌈 hashtag only to photos and videos shared over this weekend and only submit your own visuals to the project. If you include music in your video submissions, please only use music to which you own the rights. Any tagged photo or video shared over the weekend is eligible to be featured next week.

If I ever forget to get outside and enjoy my immediate surroundings, the summer solstice always refreshes my perspective. Today the sun is going to be shining the longest it will be all year, drenching California in more gold than usual. But not just here - it’s the height of summer all across northern hemisphere. Just think, billions of people in celebration of the greatest life-force planet earth has ever known. As for where I celebrate, I think there’s nowhere better than my true home - the great Pacific.

“This Pharaoh Eagle-owl chick was hiding amongst the long yellow grass for a while, so I got down on the ground for an eye-level shot, and waited,” writes #YourShotPhotographer Mohammad Murad. “Then the owl felt safe, or curious enough to raise its head and look at me. Since I was on the ground, everything was washed out perfectly giving this flaming effect!”

Top Shot features the photo with the most votes from the previous day’s Daily Dozen, 12 photos chosen by the Your Shot editors from thousands of recent uploads. Our community votes for their favorite photo from the selection, and the Top Shot is showcased on the @natgeoyourshot Instagram account.
