Last week I had a wonderful opportunity to participate in something pretty special. My good buddy @blacksmithtools purchased the anvil collection previously belonging to Richard Postman. For those not in the know, Mr.Postman wrote “Anvils in America” (AIA for short-the anvil bible!) as well as “Mousehole forge”. These are two of the most informative and thorough books on anvils out there. Anyone interested in anvils needs to own both of these fantastic resources.
Anyways, many (most) of the anvils in this collection were featured in AIA, which is why this collection was so very special. It was humbling to see all of the anvils featured in the book in person. Wonderful to see all of the stamps and markings first hand, and see all of the details Postman mentions in his books. So, me and @billscherrerforgeworks headed to Michigan and helped Andrew load the anvils to make them ready for their new home in TX.
The following day we were all invited to meet Mr.Postman himself, what an honor that was! I have talked with Dick several times on the phone, but never met him in person. What an experience! He is such a wealth of knowledge, and has such stories to tell! He is also quite the funny guy. I had the opportunity to purchase an anvil that he carved as well. He has been a hero of mine, so owning a piece he made is incredibly memorable and personal. It will be one of the highlights of my little collection. I look forward to visiting him again in the near future.
For those wondering, Andrew is keeping the collection together 100% and will eventually have them on display to view.
