“Still A Family: A Story About Children and Divorce,” by Desiree Gordon-Tomlinson is based on a true story of how two young sisters, Grace and Mia, face the challenge of accepting the news that their parents are divorcing. When they first learn of the news that Mommy is moving to South Carolina and Daddy is staying in Washington, D.C., it’s very saddening. However, the girls quickly learn that what they thought was going to be sad news, has a happy ending. They soon realize that even though the family will be living miles apart, they are Still a Family.

POLICE TELL PHILADELPHIA BARBER TO STOP PROVIDING FREE HAIRCUTS TO HOMELESS!!!!! After making headlines for providing free haircuts for the homeless in Philadelphia, barber Brennon Jones wants to know why his good deed has now drawn the wrong type of attention. In a video uploaded to Twitter by Muslim activist StanceGrounded,(April 16, 2019) the Haircuts 4 Homeless founder is seen being accosted by police officers “A police officer approached me and told me I had to shut down immediately after receiving a call from a sergeant,” Jones said. “I asked for the sergeant’s name and badge number and a legitimate excuse why. He didn’t give me any information of why I had to shut down, he just told me I had to.” Jones informed the officer that he had received permission to provide haircuts on the sidewalk to those in need, and did not budge. The officer then made some phone calls while seemingly arguing with Jones in the two-minute viral clip. “I try not to let anything stop me from the mission and the mission is bigger than myself, and it’s all about those people who are forgotten, who are looked down on, who are talked about and mistreated,” Jones said. “Lives are literally changed, there’s a rebranding of humanity and it’s all ‘cause [of] this initiative. So I’m gonna keep going and I won’t let nothing get in the way of the goal and that’s to spread love.” The Philadelphia Police Department has yet to provide an official statement on the matter but did offer a tepid response on Twitter.

👑 I’m still processing my thoughts about this one because, wow, it brought up a LOT. But I will say that I loved Queenie. I devoured this book last weekend and it makes me so happy as a young black British woman to see this book getting well deserved hype and praise. I was immediately drawn to reading this because both the author and main character are also young black British women from Caribbean backgrounds. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Queenie is a reminder of why I enjoy contemporary books so much, and while the character was in many ways problematic (as much as the society she’s in), I found myself rooting for her all the way. Style wise, this was a very easy read but it didn’t shy away from highlighting common struggles such as career progression, relationships (in this case interracial relationships), heartbreak and mental health and how they can be experienced as a black woman. It’s equally political as it is humorous and it was the perfect book to drum up some reading enthusiasm. There’s SO much in the book and my caption doesn’t really do it justice but I’m so glad to have read it. (Will happily talk about this book in DMs if anyone wants to).⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #Queenie #👑#candicecartywilliams #newrelease #coverlove #ownvoicesreviews #blackgirlsread #blackwomenread #blackbritish #vscobooks #diversebooks #bookaddict #bookreview #bookworm #bookish #bookreview #flatlay #newbookstagram #bibliophile #booklover #Bookstagram #bookaholic #apriltbr

Too often, the history of slavery is romanticized for young readers in a way that makes it hard for them to completely understand how revolutionary it is to be a black young reader. #thelitladies

This book is for every person who’s ever been the only black person in the room. Those who were told they talk or act white. Those who were admonished and scolded because “black folks don’t do that.” And to those who just want to exist without wondering or worrying if your very black existence makes someone else uncomfortable... #thelitladies

💔 You Don't Deserve My Love 💔

Tawfiq has been dating Benazir—more like wasting her time—for the past three years. As a full-time blogger who focuses on love and relationships, Benazir often wonders how it is so easy to give others advice while her own relationship struggles to stay afloat.

While some relationships bend under the pressure of infidelity, that isn’t the case for Tawfiq and Benazir. A previous relationship that left Tawfiq scarred, coupled with unresolved issues with his mother, have left him with a crippling fear of commitment.

Benazir is hopeful that things will work out—she isn’t ready to accept anything else. Knowing Tawfiq’s capability to be the perfect mate, her love for him won’t allow her to quit, but just when it seems they’re on one accord, his commitment issues cause him to push her away just as quickly as he reeled her in. On the brink of dismantling their attachment, Benazir is faced with the decision to stick it out or leave the love of her life behind.

What happens when love is inevitable, but commitment is out of reach? Will Tawfiq finally get over his fears and commit to Benazir? Or, will his fear of commitment be the driving force that tears them apart?

Book 11. “We’ve been taught that silence would save us, but it won’t.” Isra is a young Palestinian girl. Fareeda, who lives in New York with her husband and sons, came to Palestine to find a bride for her oldest son, Adam. When Isra leaves everybody and everything she knows for America, she brought with her the hope of liberation from the lowly expectations of women and the accepted abuse at the hands of men who chose them but do not necessarily love them. Fareeda makes sure she knows how wrong she is. Sarah, Fareeda’s outcasted daughter, won’t subscribe to their cultural norms, and Deya, Isra’s daughter finds herself confused on what to do since she’s raised by Fareeda, following the death of her parents. “A Woman is no Man” is about breaking generational curses and finding your voice. It’s beautiful and sad, and is a wonderful book that took me too long to read because work and life have really been too many things. Nevertheless, I enjoyed reading about a culture I knew very little about, and I definitely recommend this book! #iRead #yearofreading2019 #whatismelreading
