Hey everyone! Allison here! Today I’ll throw myself to the wolves for our Transformation Tuesday post... as mentioned, this week is on Self-Development!⠀
When I first entered the mental health field in my 20’s, I worked an intense, high stress, emotionally challenging job. Unfortunately, even though I had tons of support around me, the job took a major toll on my well-being. All of a sudden I started experiencing a lot of anxiety, and constant stomach problems. And I shamed myself for not being able to “handle the job.” It didn’t seem to matter what I did to manage the stress - I felt nervous and on edge more often than not. Now remember, this is a very common experience in high stress jobs, but it’s easy to ignore the symptoms and just push through. I was lucky enough to have an incredibly supportive supervisor who encouraged me to start listening to myself and what I was needing. She helped me identify my personal triggers (the internal stuff the job brought up for me). I believe this is where my self-development journey truly began. If I wanted to pursue a career as a mental health professional, I knew I had to work on myself. I started reading self-help books, talking to a therapist, and set some goals for my future.⠀
