St Gabriel, Archangel
Saint of the Day
Gabriel was an archangel who acted as a messenger for God.
He had large wings, dressed in blue and white and carried a lily, a trumpet, a lantern, a tree branch from Paradise and a scroll.
Gabriel explained the coming of the Messiah to the prophet Daniel in 600BC.
Later he explained the coming of John the Baptist to John’s father Zachary. Zachary was sceptical because his wife was so old and so he was struck dumb until the birth.
Gabriel's main job though was to explain to Mary, barely a teenager, that she was going to have a baby, and that baby was going to be literally the Son of God.
Mary said “How can that be since I have no knowledge of man?” Gabriel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon thee.”
Jesus’s return to Earth will be announced by Gabriel blowing his trumpet.
There are many beautiful paintings of Gabriel, see here: @lamplifeboatladder
