How many calories did I burn? Fat loss is more complicated than simply thinking about burning calories during exercise. Some forms of exercise may not burn as much fat during the activity, but end up burning more total fat because of “excess post-exercise oxygen consumption,” or EPOC. After a bout of strength training, our body’s oxygen demands can be elevated for HOURS, meaning the benefits don’t stop when the activity stops.
So, for a healthy lifestyle, generally speaking it’s a good idea to incorporate both high intensity and low intensity work. But simply asking “how many calories did I just burn?” won’t get you the full picture.
