I boldly hung this up in a prominent spot in the library today (accountability is a great motivator). I'm feeling optimistic about reaching my goal, and also hoping this will spark some great conversations with my young readers. #mglit #schoollibrarian #readinggoals #bookaweek

Apparently it’s #nationalreadingday. I’ve been on a bit of a drought but got to finish this book up early this morning.
I’ve read every Thrawn book by Timothy Zahn starting with the EU ones. Simply, put Thrawn is one of the best characters to never show up in a Star Wars movie. This was probably my least favorite and I’d still say it was very good book. It did drag a bit in parts and I expected a bit more action with the addition of Vader. However, Timothy Zahn’s style overcomes that. This was classic “Sherlock Thrawn”. Luckily I got a head start with my #readabookaweek challenge so I’m still way ahead of schedule.

7) I Still Find That Offensive - Claire Fox ... I didn’t agree wholly with this book (which I’m sure Clare would be okay with hearing) as some of it I thought was contradictory/lacking (for example what about the freedom of lying?). Nonetheless it certainly highlighted some of the issues I faced at Uni (deciding not to join the feminist society due to free-speech restrictions) and I certainly believe those in my close circles who are “champions” of personal politics etc give this a read. So informative and although patronising, it was just the right tone for a book of its kind. #book7 #bookaweekchallenge #bookaweek #clairefox #ifindthatoffensive #istillfindthatoffensive #book #freespeech #snowflake #gammon #nonfiction

Writing down notes about what you’re learning is one of the most beneficial ways when it comes to retaining knowledge. When you write down your new insights, you actively think about how you can put those insights to words. This process will help you to retain the knowledge better. Be sure to write it down on a piece of paper. Writing stimulates and engages your brain better than typing.
-
When you learn something new, try to link that knowledge to a framework (network) that you already have. When you link the new knowledge to a category of knowledge that you already have, it is easier for your brain to retain.
-
Sharing your knowledge with others means that you have to understand the knowledge yourself first. When you understand the knowledge and can teach it to others, you will retain the knowledge way better through the interaction you are having with that person. Besides that, teaching another person means they can give you direct feedback on how you understand the knowledge yourself and they can give you (new) insights as well.
-
What is your favorite way to retain knowledge?

Everyone needs someone they look up to. Someone to teach you lessons in life, and pushes you to become better. (Why give average effort when you can give 10 times the effort?) @grantcardone thanks for everything you put out there to the world. I have so many people I look up to, for many different reasons. .

Livre 4: La saga continue….

If #janeaustenjanuary isn't a thing it should be! Over January I have read (almost*) every Jane Austen novel and can finally add my 2 cents worth to a controversial bookish topic; Jane Austen rankings:
1. Emma
2. Pride and Prejudice
3. Persuasian
4. Northanger Abbey
5. Sense and Sensibility
6. Mansfield Park
.
*I read Sense and Sensibility mid last year and it seemed too recent for a re-read. Hoping short term memory didn't impact my feelings too much

About four years ago I made a conscious effort to stop buying books. At first it was to stop buying new books from bookstores, then it was to stop buying books from op shops. I reduced the books I kept at home and now only borrow books from the library. The main motivation was to reduce the need to own things. Now I enjoy being part of the community of library goers in our city (Dunedin is a UNESCO City of Literature) and of course all the money and space that borrowing books saves me 📖 I use a similar approach for Rafa but of course, with him I’m far more flexible 📚 #bookstagram

“The Blue Sweater” is the autobiography of Jacqueline Novogratz, founder of the Acumen Fund. Through her book, she takes readers with her on her journey from wanting desperately to make a difference in the world to learning how to help others effectively. She explores the pitfalls of traditional charity and works to help readers understand alternate ways of helping people— by giving them the tools and accountability to help themselves. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
▪️
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Novogratz has an incredible story, makes good points and isn’t shy about looking her mistakes and successes square in the face. It’s overall message was an important one, and Novogratz did a good using her story to ask readers to critically examine traditional charity and the ways we all, as individuals and part of a global community, can make contributions toward a better world. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
