Here’s a heart-wrenching and beautifully written book that tells an important story. (TW- domestic violence)
The fact that the author used her mother’s story as inspiration for this one placed things into perspective for me. I felt a lot of feelings reading Lily’s story. It made me think about certain things in a different light. This was my first book from Colleen Hoover based on a recommendation from a bookish friend, and I have already added several others to my TBR, so it won’t be my last.
However, I would’ve gone into this book with slightly different expectations had it not been categorized as a romance. It’s my opinion that this is more women’s fiction where there happens to be a love story looming in the background.
This was mostly about Lily’s journey, and it’s an important one. The environment in which she grew up formed a lot of her mindset when it comes to love as an adult. But when she finds herself in a situation she never thought she’d be in, well, her perspective shifts. She has choices to make. We watch her as realizations dawn, as understanding sets in, and she has to make a series of decisions on what her reality is going to be. This is the forefront of the story.
Now, with that being said, I absolutely loved Atlas, our hero. I wanted more of him on the pages, because he clearly went on quite the journey himself from when he first met him as a homeless teenager just trying to survive. The connection he and Lily had from the beginning was so pure and sweet, that my heart almost couldn’t take it. 💜
Have you read this one? I want to know what you thought about it!
