Low waste periods ❤️ //
For me personally, changing my period habits was one of the most difficult changes to navigate. Conventional period products (tampons and pads) are made of plastic (I was pretty shocked when I found this out) but alternatives such as @totmorganic are much more expensive as they’re made of organic cotton. I decided to make the change about a year ago (whilst being very aware this is a privileged change to make).
Then a few months in, I thought there was more I could do. By investing in a @mooncupltd and using these #gifted pair of @wukawear period pants, I could actually save money in the long-term and cut down on my waste even more!
I’m not going to lie, the moon cup took me AGES to get used to. It took me months (4-5) to understand how to put it in and take it out in ways which we’re comfortable to me as well as experimenting with the length of the stem. I know people who became much more savvy with their moon cup after 1-2 goes. We’re all different and will have different experiences but I can confidently say it has changed the game for me. No carrying around loads of period products, no changing every few hours, no awkwardly carrying sanitary products to the toilet, no running to the shops in desperation to find products, and finally no more period waste!
I use my moon cup during the day. I use the wuka pants at night. And then when my period starts/ends it’s a lot lighter so I use @totmorganic liners.
Luckily I’m pretty regular and I’ve noticed changes in my body which clearly indicate when I’m going to start so I always make sure I have a liner/my cup on me around that time. But sometimes it doesn’t work out! Last month I completely forgot to take it to work and had to buy some plastic ones from the shops. But that’s ok, I used 2-3 and then have saved the rest for when friends come round and need an emergency tampon!
For me, more than the sustainability element, it’s the convenience of these products that I’m obsessed with. Although these products might require taking an initial financial hit, it works out cheaper in the long run!
Have you made the switch to more eco friendly period alternatives?
