When you have a large group of people making wreaths, it’s quite fascinating how each of them can have similar ingredients but make something with a completely different feel... some like wild and loose with tumbling ribbons and some like neat foliage with perfect velvet bows.... this lovely lady at Strawberry Hill House was definitely the latter. .

I must confess, I haven't sown any biennials this year, or hardy annuals for that matter, but I can still do them in the spring. I was feeling so lethargic from pregnancy symptoms this autumn that I just didn't get round to it, as well as neglecting to do any of the jobs that needed to be done out there. Since my energy has come back somewhat, I've managed to tick some important jobs off the list - namely planting tulips and digging up dahlias. But as you can see, the strawflower patch has yet to be tended to, among many other things.

On the plus side, looking around the garden I can see that lots of foxgloves have self-seeded, even finding themselves a home in a forgotten flower pot! One thing that's amazed me about working with plants is how much most things just want to survive. I dug up my ranunculus corms in late spring and popped them next to some potted plants, then promptly forgot about them. A few weeks ago I remembered them and thought it worth just checking to see what state they were in. Low and behold they'd taken root in the muddy surface of the concrete path and little shoots had sprouted! Another job saved! Of course I don't recommend this lazy approach to flower growing, but it's astonishing what you can get away with sometimes.
I've got self-seeded nigella and calendula growing too, though we'll see how well they do over the winter since it's likely to be a pretty brutal one. I'm looking forward to seeing what else (if anything) has self-seeded come early springtime. I've got my fingers crossed for some honesty and poppies! @folkloreflowers_

Did you know..... mistletoe is ‘foraged’ and hand cut from apple trees as part of essential orchard maintenance.

It is the county flower of Herefordshire

You can only claim as many kisses as you have berries on your sprig of Mistletoe so choose well!

Not such a pretty picture but just to show that flower farming is an all year round job - today’s task is to try and finish covering my field beds for the winter - it maybe 1deg but there’s no wind so hopefully the silage sheeting I use won’t be flying all over the place. And yes it’s plastic but I put it away in the summer and reuse each winter. And it’s a beautiful day so I’m loving being outside - thank you to Thames water for their hi-vis jacket (don’t ask) which is the warmest coat I have ever owned (or not owned as the case maybe) 🙊

A beautiful crisp morning! New fence up in the new flower field and I can now get to work with setting it all up. Today’s jobs: replant the hedge with gorgeous Hawthorn, it’s very gappy after we removed all the dead wood, and set out some new beds. #bloombyryanlewis #flowerfarm #flowerfarmer #britishflowers #flowersfromthefarm #FFTF

For me this year it’s been about coming to a place of ethical floristry. Gone are the easy but plastic foam rings that I used happily before I learned they’d be here long after I’m pushing up the daisies. Gone too are flowers from the Dutchman. Beautiful though they are, their carbon footprint is adding to my own already too big feet! I confess I can be a bit of a zealot once I set my heart on something. There are plenty who will question motives and adherence to your stated values. My response is that I’m far from perfect but trying my best. I remember chatting with a lawyer who joked that you never needed a good memory if you never lied. That’s where I am. Older. Still working on the wiser but softly seeking sustainability

Thank you to everyone who has ordered a wreath this year ✌🏻last orders heading out this week.

What a difference a month makes, we cut and arranged all of this from our site in mid November 🍂 We’re so lucky to have a glasshouse which extends our season and allows us to grow so much like these Avignon chrysanthemums - our most successful glasshouse grown crop this season 🌱 I wouldn’t say we’re pros at growing flowers outside but flower farming under glass is a different thing altogether for all sorts of reasons • We don’t use chemicals / pesticides so the natural eco system that works outside needs to be replicated inside somehow because all those cosy and sometimes outright boiling temperatures inside make it the ideal breeding ground for pests • Soil: outside we grow in London clay (lucky us!!!) inside we’re growing in something totally different that needs a lot of love and attention so we need to keep adding organic matter and improving the soil quality for our crops • Temperature: how to make what is essentially a glass box a viable growing environment for more months of the year?? 2019 is going to be all about learning how to grow better under glass 👊🏻

Teeny stocks planted out this week. But what colour? This dilemma is what we’ve been covering on Module 4 of The Business of Growing Flowers on-line course @businessofflowers. They’re mainly destined for weddings, so lots of white, palest pink, apricot still. But this year there are more yellow, lavender, purple. No mid pink. Only time and orders will tell me if I was right or not. But wouldn’t it be boring if every year was the same?! What do you reckon about wedding colours this year?

Ahh, flowers from @petershamnurseries 😍 They are really pretty but I wonder if they were grown in the UK or if they’ve been flown in from abroad? Roses certainly aren’t in season at the moment; the Christmas tree sprigs...yes! At least I think!
As much as I love having fresh flowers all year round, I’m starting to wonder if I should indulge as often as I do? Why is it that the majority of the flowers I see on supermarket shelves or in florists are not in season or are just too tropical to have grown here...surely this has an impact on the environment, because these flowers have been flown in from abroad. There’s been huge a movement around buying locally grown food so is it time to start educating people about the importance of buying seasonal / locally grown flowers? I think so.
