I call this one “a couple of idiots” | it’s rained our last two training runs, which is actually a good thing. The reality of training months for a race is sometimes it‘s cold and rainy on race day. You can either not show up or put on a trash bag and do the damn thang 😹😭 (long distance running is one big metaphor for how to succeed in life. Confession time. After the #brooklynhalf back in May, my body felt horrible. At about mile 9, my lower back, glutes, hamstrings and calfs, all stiffened up in a way that I had never experienced before. I finished, as uncomfortable as I was, but I knew that even though running that race was a goal of mine this year, my body simply wasn't ready for the amount of stress I put on it. After being given my workout clearance back in September, I honestly only took it easy for about 2 months. I then just started pushing myself, because I wanted my body to perform the way it used to. I lost patience in taking it one step at a time and I instead rushed ahead, to prove to myself and to others that I was fine and my body was just as strong and just as athletic as it was in the past. It was idiotic and I would have never let a client of mine skip the rebuilding process. I would never let someone skip rebuilding stability and core strength before going back into training for a #halfmarathon. I knew better, I just didn't want to accept that my body was different and I needed to take the proper steps. Anyway, now, a year later, after accepting that my body is different, accepting that I'm not as strong as I used to be, and after coming to terms with how tight my joints are now, how tight my muscles are, how much tighter my scar tissue has gotten, I have decided to take a full leap back, and start from scratch. I'm starting with pilates and alignment work in order to rebuild not only a solid foundation but a better foundation than I originally had. I have been really humbled by this all and I want to do it right this time. I do not want to put up the front that my body's back to normal just for the sake of looking a certain way because of my job. I need to embrace that I have a lot of things to work on, to become better again, to feel better again, and to rebuild my body better than it was in the past. Here's to a new chapter in my fitness journey and to learning more about my body. Let’s start with stretching! #Stretching is a vital game-changer for runners. Healthy #runners perform two types of stretching: dynamic stretching before their run, and static stretching after. Today, we’ll tell you about dynamic stretching.

Dynamic stretching increases #mobility, raises the temperature of the #muscles, and enhances #performance. These controlled and coordinated #movements bring the muscle in and out of their range of motion, and is held for up to seven seconds.

Kneel, with right leg at a 90 degree and left knee directly beneath the hip. Reach left arm up, and then over, gently stretching left side body. Simultaneously, bend the right knee till a stretch is felt through the left hip and quad. Exhale, engaging your abdominals, and making sure not to hyper-extend (arch) through your lower back. Hold for up to 7 seconds, return to starting position. Repeat 3-5x, then switch sides.

Someone asked me how I replete the caloric deficit after a long run - the answer is @chukobk and @vanleeuwenicecream 😹🤗 for runs over 10 miles, I take a @guenergylabs packet every 45 minutes or so for calories. Had an amazing start to the running week and then on Friday, I came down with a cold. What??! It’s 109* outside and I’m sick. Not a bad weekend to get stuck inside and do some packing but also just to kick back and relax. I did 35 mins of NTC Yoga yesterday and 30 mins of strength today. I’m sad I didn’t get my long run in today but I’m taking precautions and letting my body get the rest it needs. Today I can celebrate that a year has passed since I was T-Boned by a wreckless driver while biking to work, splitting my knee cap, and completely changing my trajectory.

And after all of the doubt, all of the physical therapy, and all of the overwhelming emotions, last month I ran the Brooklyn Half Marathon again, in the pouring rain, finishing at 1:51:15, only 4 minutes shy of my personal best time last year. I hadn’t run that far in 11 months.
So many takeaways from the last year. All I can say is never give up, think positive, set goals, and push yourself farther than you think you can go. Listen to your body. Get through that darkness, because you're stronger than you realize, you just have to believe in yourself.

Shout out to my running misfits, @cnitti , @philipwilbornsmith , @vruizescribano for being there for me. Love you dudes so much.

The Brooklyn Half exactly one month ago today
.
About a week before this race I received the results from an MRI I had done on my right ankle. I was anticipating a negative result relating to my Achilles tendon which was the area I was experiencing pain and discomfort running the previous 6 weeks. It turns out my Achilles was just fine but it was my ankle that was in trouble. I had one partially torn ligament and one fully torn ligament in my right ankle
.
For those in the medical field I had a grade 1 injury to the anterior inferior tibiofibular ligament, a grade 2 partial tear of the posterior talofibular ligament and a grade 3 complete tear of the anterior talofibular ligament
.
I was relieved to know my Achilles was fine as that has the potential to end careers. However it was disappointing to find out my ankle was in such bad shape
.
Against the advice of the many doctors I spoke with I decided to run the Brooklyn Half anyway. I was in pain pretty much the whole race but I knew what I was getting myself into. I wanted to break 1:30 but couldn’t do it with the ankle. Thankfully I was able to finish the race without further injury at 1:36:22. I know it wasn’t the smartest thing to do and I wouldn’t recommend anyone do something like this. However, in my mind I had already skipped a half marathon in Madrid a month before due to the injury and I didn’t want to miss another race
.
I haven’t ran since running Brooklyn (4 weeks!) to give myself a chance to recover. They say this injury can take up to 3 months to heal. I honestly don’t have time for that as the Berlin Marathon is in 88 days. I have been cross training the last 4 weeks to maintain fitness; stationary bike, elliptical and weight lifting. Not the funnest things compared to running but at least I can train. I’ll head to the Ortho this week to get a status update as to when I can hit that pavement again. Anxious to run again
