I talk a lot about energy management. Being an introvert and a DISC Consultant, I am super aware of energy and the role it plays in our careers. With this in mind, it is important to ensure that your job isn't draining you - not on a regular basis at least.

Here are some questions for you to explore: 🙌🏻 Do you feel that your current role drains your energy? 🙌🏻 Do you feel drained on a regular basis? 🙌🏻 Despite feeling drained, do you otherwise enjoy your role? 🙌🏻 Are there specific tasks that make you feel more energetically drained? 🙌🏻 Do you have a plan in place to reenergise your mind and body after undertaking draining activities? 🙌🏻 If your role is draining you to a point of burn out or consistent fatigue, what are your options? (Can you change jobs? Move roles? Reduce your hours? Implement strategies to manage your energy?) Your job shouldn't drain you to a point where you are too exhausted to enjoy your life outside of work. And it certainly shouldn't be regularly burning you out or affecting your mental health. If it is, it might be time for a change. Let me know if this is something I can help with.

~On this very cold day, I decided to take a mental health day to recharge my body and mind from the eventful past few weeks:) For me, this consists of taking a day to relax from my busy schedule.

Sometimes, taking a day off from your busy life is necessary for stress relief and burnout prevention! In fact, according to Global News stats, 1/4 Canadians quit their jobs because of high levels of stress (Rocco, 2018). This is only job related stress. You can definitely imagine the stress people encounter outside of work in relation to family, finance, personal health, friends etc. Handling all of these components can create a huge tole on our bodies and minds. But most of all, we tend to forget how to take care of ourselves through it all.

So, if you are having a hard time to concentrate, to think clearly or even to control your emotions, maybe it would be a great idea to take a step back from your busy schedule and take that time for you. Taking a day off will help you recharge to prepare you for the following days ahead
**
Now we all embrace self-care differently so it's important to do the things that relaxes you and makes you happy. Therefore, plan your day ahead to remove a few stressful steps and give yourself what your body and mind needs to heal. I guarantee you, this will be more productive and easier to just enjoy your day. **
I cant emphasize enough by saying how our minds are just as important as our physical bodies. Our minds are so powerful that most of the time, it is the main cause of certain physical symptoms. So make sure you dont neglect its signs and that you take care of your mental health♡ You deserve it.

ENERGY UPDATE ⚡️ So I’ve actually been feeling quite good the past couple of days. Been implementing mindfulness, giving less energy to my thoughts and that has actually helped me feel better and even be more productive! 💭
On the other hand, I’ve also been taking some time off every now and again and being kind to myself. Go have a bath, do a facial, eat that extra piece of chocolate. 🍫
This combo of self care and mindful living have really uplifted my spirit.

Ever have those days where you just feel unfocused? Scattered? In a brain fog?

Even though you can’t focus, you feel like you have to keep going and try to be productive. Then this goes on and on until you get frustrated for not getting anything done!? .

We’ll tell you a little secret... it’s OKAY to give yourself a break. Moreover, it’s even GOOD to give yourself a small break to recuperate. This can even help you be MORE productive. Crazy I know.

Well Chicago, bundle up and take a walk outside. Do a guided meditation for at least 5 minutes. Take some deep breaths. Drink water. .

The crispy fallen leaves of autumn. Their signal of transition into another form (compost) is magical.
What else is magical are the health benefits they offer.
Picking the leaves up by hand after raking but ‘enjoyably’ rather than ‘methodically’ helps. There are many benefits. The first is stress relief. Its a mental and physical exercise.

Exercise is always advocated as a means to reduce stress and anxiety and most think; working out, aerobics, walking, weights!
Gardening (now our autumn) clean up will offer that too! When it is done as joy, instead of work it is invigorating...the scent of the leaves, the coolness, the childlike play, (like rolling and jumping in them) offers more than exercise.
Bagging them can be done with presence and gratitude, and reflection that nothing stays the same. Nature is a reminder.

An invitation to garden with joy and remember to...
Stretch first.
Bend mindfully.
Use the opportunity to lunge.
Breathe the essence, practice breathing.
When picking up the leaves use your bare hands if possible. It will help connect to being heart centered (rather than the mind). Nature does offer stress relief, and exercise, not work 🌱with a different mindset.

“Burnout happens when you avoid being human for too long” – Michael Gungor

Today we speak to Prof. Katleen Bogaerts, who recently joined the Rehabilitation Sciences and Physiotherapy research group of UHasselt. Working both in research and clinical practice, she has extensive experience on stress physiology and stress-related disorders. Let’s benefit from her expertise on burn-out☝️:

Q: What is burn-out?
.
A: The cause of burn-out is multifactorial, implying (interactions of) work-related and person-specific risk factors. It is a result of prolonged strain without recuperation. Chronic stress leads to dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system and HPA axis; causing a wide range of impairing cognitive, affective and physical complaints, of which feeling exhausted is a key symptom.
.
Q: Being a researcher, do you think that certain elements of your career increase the risk of burn-out?
.
A: It is important that job demands never outstrip a person’s ability to cope with stress. Known job-related risk factors include unrealistically high workloads, low social support, lack of reward or recognition, poor organizational resources, low levels of job control, etc. However, some personality profiles are more susceptible than others. Burn-out often affects precisely those who are hard-working, perfectionistic, conscientious, being in control, and loyal. These are very positive qualities but they may be pitfalls too. It is essential to know how to engage these qualities in your benefit instead of losing yourself in them.

Q: Can science inform us on techniques to fight burn-out?
.
A: We know that only prescribed sick leave and rest does not work. There are three different stages in treatment: a recuperation phase (complaints reduction, dosage and relaxation); active recovery phase (learning coping skills, tackling problems and avoidance); and reintegration phase (gradual employment integration, putting new skills into practice and relapse prevention). International guidelines suggest a multidisciplinary approach, including cognitive-behavioral treatment and organizational interventions as being most effective.

Time for self-care is more difficult to come by these days.
During the seasons of life that are more hectic our initial impulse is often to cut out the things that fill us up in order to get more done. It can feel like we don’t have time to take care of ourselves. Yet these are the times where we need to carve out space for ourselves more than ever and to treat this time as sacred.
This morning I choose to honour myself with a cup of hot coffee in the quiet morning hours, a quick journaling session and by showing up on my mat @yogabeyond_yyc.

Identify what is purposeful and aligned.
Release the things that aren't in contribution.

Lead with the transformation/result you are helping your ideal customer achieve.

Avoid shiny objects! Be inspired and collaborate with others, but stop obsessing how to do it just like them. You need to find your own truth.
Create your own simple flow that works for YOU.
Scale it.

Growing your movement is meant to be FUN.

Your entity doesn't want you to be stressing or burnout trying to do all the things.

She trusts YOU to grow this vision and serve with it... and that includes you being in flow.

You do not need more complexity to help more people or to make more money. 😘

If it ever feels like your self-care isn’t quite meeting your needs, you’re not alone. Sometimes we are simply moving too quickly or are amidst too much flurry to accurately see what our needs may be. It’s necessary to slow down and give the space and time necessary for a better understanding of the impact the work has on us and, accordingly, our needs.⠀

This can be done by simply taking pause between tasks during the day, perhaps jotting a few notes to collect regular data on how you’re doing. Or, you might turn to a tool like the Professional Quality of Life Scale to assess your burnout and compassion satisfaction.⠀

Start small, start slow, but just start. A sustained, fulfilling career as a healer is possible and accessible.⠀
