Before travel nursing, I was burnt out to the maxxxxxxx from nursing. I had lost sight of why I went into the profession. I forgot that the people that were my patients were more than just numbered rooms we as healthcare providers referred to. They are human beings. They are moms, dads, daughters, sons, sisters, brothers, significant others, companions, friends, lovers, beautiful souls. Not just a number. I feel extremely guilty admitting that.

The patient population I was taking care of at home were sick, really sick, hanging on for dear life with machines in place of declining organs and continuous infusions of drugs to support and supplement human life. I often defaulted to disassociating myself from connecting with patients and their loved ones to prevent myself from attachment and the hurt brought on by grief and loss of patients. I started spending less time in rooms explaining things, providing less compassion and empathy and was bombarded with heavy and unsafe patient loads and so many tasks I simply could never get ahead of despite the 12 hours in my shift. I knew I needed a change because I lost my purpose and passion. So I had even more reason to pursue travel nursing - to escape a physically, mentally, and spiritually draining place where I just didn’t care anymore.

Then I started travel nursing, being dropped into hospital units and situations I was unfamiliar with having had minimal training and expected to figure it out on the fly...it was and is overwhelming, stressful, and annoying. I thought travel nursing was going to break these feelings and emotions I fought so hard to bury deep inside. But again, I questioned why I decided to pursue this profession, this couldn’t and shouldn’t be all that it had to offer. Nursing is more than feeling burnt out, I know it, but how?? Human connection was why I chose a career in nursing. It is something that I cherish and what sets it apart from other healthcare professions since we spend the most time with patients. But what I didn’t realize was that it was going to be immensely emotionally, mentally, and physically draining.

I enjoyed a walk to the beach after church today. It was a little cold so there weren't many people there and I got some time for reflection. I'm grateful to be surrounded by this natural beauty. I'm grateful for refreshing times of self care.

1 hr yoga class, 30 min lateral machine, 100+ crunches with weights on decline bench, 200lbs on the squat machine, hand weights, & lots of water...all in a day’s workout. 🏋🏻‍♀️ Why? Self-care is always the first thing to go when we get “busy.” And when you are in the mental health, health, first responder, military or clergy profession, you are at an even greater risk of experiencing compassion fatigue, vicarious/secondary trauma, and burnout 🥵. It’s Saturday’s #counsellorcheckin

What self-care did I practice?
•Bubble bath with essential oils & my book
•Mindful eating—sort of. Eating meals while I work or listen to a guided meditation instead of in front of Netflix
•I took a day to #workfromhome to decompress & relax
•I got my nails done & my eyebrows threaded
•I strategically scheduled my sessions with breaks in between
•I cancelled a weekend workshop to instead attend an aroma therapy massage with @reviveaswellness
•I took Arthur & Alfred for solo walks and we had the most wonderful experience
•I said no to something to do something for me instead

What did I learn this week?
•I don’t feel burnt out this week
•I am super behind on my to-do list but hoping to get caught up next week
•I am slowly but surely learning more efficient ways to run my practice, see clients & still take care of myself

My inbox is FULL of therapists confiding in me about how their job is making them physically sick or draining them emotionally. If practitioners are feeling this extreme burnout, how can we not question this system?

As I read these messages, all I can think about is how much we are in need for a paradigm shift in the mental health field. Psychotherapy was started by Sigmund Freud literally a century ago. What he coined the ‘talking cure’ is an outdated paradigm.

So many exciting things happening. We’re learning about the role of the gut in mental health. We’re started to understand how trauma and emotions are stored in the body and hijack the nervous system. Nutritional psychology is emerging. Psychoneuroimmunology (immune system and its tie to mental health) is getting traction. The brain itself can change physically throughout life. Something I was taught was impossible.

We are selling ourselves short when we don’t evolve this conversation. Open ourselves to new methods, and release a system in order to create a new one.

Dafni Kalafati- Art Therapist- Foodpath Centre Manager
Dafni is a freelance documentary filmmaker and art therapist, based in Athens Greece.

She studied Intercultural Education and Photography and then followed a master’s degree in art therapy, in the school of fine arts of Buenos Aires, in Argentina. There she worked for several years in the public mental institution «Borda» as an art therapist using the new media (video and photography) as therapeutic tools.

Her love for social action and the arts made her engaged in documentary film making and since then she has travelled to some of the most remote parts of the planet together with her video camera filming documentaries and teaching photography and art.

Nowadays Dafni splits her time between Athens and Lefkada, conducting Art Therapy and Participatory Video workshops and developing her personal documentary projects. She is also a founder member of AMAKA non profit which runs various programs of social help through the Arts catering for underprivileged urban groups.

Whatever free time remains, she likes to spend it on the mountains. .

Breathe in through your nose.... and out through your nose. 🧘🏻

Have you taken a yoga or meditation class recently? If not, you should sincerely give it some thought. I mean, yoga is a fantastic form of exercise, particularly if you're working on your balance and flexibility like I am, but yoga (and meditation) are also super helpful when it comes to dealing with stress and anxiety!

I recently attended a workshop on this with @emmaceolin from @yogaventuresco and found it so interesting looking at different strategies to change the way the body deals with stress and anxiety - if you can get to one of her classes, you definitely should. If not though, a trip to your local yoga studio could be the start (or continuation) of a beautiful relationship with a yoga practice. 🧘🏻

Om uit de donkere tijden van burn-out te komen, is het heel belangrijk dat je die dingen weer ontdekt waar je van houdt en waar je dankbaar voor bent.

Voor mij is dat mijn mooie Princess. Zij lag bij me, naast mijn hoofd, op de dagen dat het voor mij heel donker was. Onvoorwaardelijke liefde en een bepaalde kracht gaf ze mij.

Before trying art therapy, some of us were excited about new experience and some of us were worried not knowing what to expect.

When we learnt what our task was going to be, we felt like OMG, I'd rather be on the beach!

And of course, you would.
It is not comfortable to face things of your personality you were trying to avoid for so long.
It is uneasy to admit you are just a human being.
But it is so enlightening and rewarding to know more about yourself and to find ways how to cope with the new reality.

We felt stronger, wiser and definitely more in peace with ourselves.
