Book Review⁣

“When your innocence is stripped from you, when your people are denigrated, when the family you came from is denounced and your tribal ways and rituals are pronounced backward, primitive, savage, you come to see yourself as less than human. That is hell on earth, that sense of unworthiness. That's what they inflicted on us.”⁣

Saul Indian Horse is in trouble, and there seems to be only one way out. As he journeys back through his life as a northern Ojibway, from the horrors of residential school to his triumphs on the hockey rink, he must question everything he knows. I'm keeping this super vague because the beauty and heartbreak of this story is letting it unfold as you read.⁣

I spent much of my undergrad learning about injustices that occurred in our country, including Indian residential schools, but it doesn't make reading books like this any easier. Richard Wagamese writes in the most beautiful way, I could imagine each and every scene, making it that much more heartbreaking. I don't have eloquent enough words to capture the power of this book -- I haven't cried this hard while reading a book in a long time. Books like this are so important and I urge you to pick this one to open your eyes to the lives and history that came before us.⁣

Read this with a great group of ladies: @boberbookclub @gobooksgo and @what.rona.reads . Our chats and like-mindedness really added to the experience, so much so that we are going to read another book by Wagamese together!⁣

In 1976, a developer named Harry Winton bought de la Roche's North York home and claimed he would protect the house and honour de la Roche by converting part of the house into a museum. He changed his mind and would have demolished it, but enough people were concerned about preserving this piece of Canadian literary history, and the house was saved.

Rest assured, Alice Munro is still with us! Here are some reads if you want to experience her award winning work.

During the Second World War, the American military produced small paperback books, such as this one. These books provided soldiers with some thing to read in their leisure time, which was important in raising spirits while overseas #rememberanceday #ww2 #secondworldwar #ephemera #books #canadianauthors #canadianliterature #militaryhistory #americanmilitary #americanhistory #publishinghistory

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Price’s fictionalized account of Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa’s final months is a pleasure to read. So many aspects of this book are notable: the style of writing, the characters, the setting. I am now officially inspired to read The Leopard!

“Someone once said to Clive: do you think we will ever be forgiven for what we’ve done? They meant their generation and the war and what the war had done to civilisation. Clive said something I’ve never forgotten. He said: I doubt we’ll ever be forgiven. All I hope is - they’ll remember we were human beings.”

Here's one of my favourite feel-good novels, and one of L.M. Montgomery's only stories for adults. It's overshadowed by some of her other famous works (looking at you, Anne of GG) but deserves to shine in its own light.
The Blue Castle is all about self-care, shaking off the negative opinions of others, living your own best life, and recognising emotional abuse and manipulation when you see it. It's also about being satisfied with simple, free pleasures such as the beauty of the great outdoors and a simple day inside reading. And it's set in the 1920's, which gives it an interesting, cool, early modern sort of feeling.
The heroine, Valancy Stirling, has a huge catalyst which makes her decide she's done with her terrible family. And the hero, Barney Snaith, really needs to be up there with Jane Austen's Captain Wentworth when it comes to declaring his devotion! ❤
So consider it a recommendation from me for those times when you're looking for something relaxing, easy to read, but potentially life-changing in its message.
Has anyone read it? What are your thoughts?

This book, Empire of Wild, is getting all the accolades now! It's the no. 1 Indigo book of the year, for instance 😍 I can't wait to dive in since I loved The Marrow Thieves so much. Fingers crossed! 🤞🏼

This print is also from the October box of @callistocrate, gorgeous art by Aaron Paquette. If you want a high quality Canadian book box that prioritizes Canadian vendors, please check out the November theme "a Light in the Darkness". This one sounds like a fantastic historical fiction novel with a magic realism twist by a best-selling author. Don't forget my code HOWL10 when subscribing!

@librarianadvice put up a great post this morning about imposter syndrome— where you feel like you’re not as (insert negative thought here) as you really need to be to do your job.
Yesterday I hosted an event for adults (I’m the YA librarian) so a little out of my regular comfort zone.
I stumbled when I did the introductions. I wasn’t sure if the room was set up optimally for the audience. I told a little story about the author and I that I wasn’t sure people found funny. <—- faking it?

What I realize is all of this adds up to experience to make the next #libraryprogram better.
Pictured is the #mcgyvered light source I came up with so the author could read his notes with the lights off. It’s not pretty, but it worked—no faking it there.

This photo appeared in The Globe and Mail in 1927 along with a review of Jalna, de la Roche's most well-known work. The reviewer states that the book is "marked by a few unnecessary bits of coarseness." I would argue that the coarseness is actually quite necessary, and that de la Roche provides a fascinating portrayal of Canadian pioneer life where the family is a combination of their well-bred British background and their new Canadian "horsey" (a favourite word of hers) rural life.

Pedlar’s vision has always included publishing debut fiction and poetry. We love finding new talent we want you to keep your eye on. Like @heatherofnoland and her THIS IS AGATHA FALLING (Pedlar, 2019). #Repost @heatherofnoland with @get_repost

"A short but mighty read from St. John's-based author, musician, and CBC Poetry Prize longlister Heather Nolan awaits in This is Agatha Falling. Wander through a dreamlike downtown St. John's with an unreliable narrator, where past and present collide and memory is fragmented. Journey Prize-winner Sharon Bala calls this novella "a confident and lyrical debut [that] weaves past and present, memory and action into an elegant tapestry that cleverly conceals its full picture until the very end."" Self Promotion makes me anxious so here is what All Lit Up wrote 🤷‍♀️ .

You Guys! This book has freaked me out! It’s excellent but I don’t read a lot of thrillers because I have a low scare threshold. 😳 thank god I don’t have to ride elevators in tall buildings! But it has more than just a scary story. It’s a great yarn all around. Check it out! Thanks to @goodreads @penguincanada for the complimentary copy. Whew!

Mazo de la Roche (1879-1961) is a gem of a Canadian author who has fallen under the radar since she wrote in the first half of the 20th century. Her novels about life in early Ontario not only offer up lovable and relatable characters, but also deal with many societal issues such as mental illness and feminism.

The Long Way Home | Louise Penny

Can I admit that this is my first Penny? Really. Maybe I should not have picked the 10th in a series to start with, but I listened on Hoopla and only so many were available.

I did not love this, but I don’t know if it was the narrator (I swear I could have used subtitles), or audio rather than paper, or if it was the book itself. The story felt forced and the ending was anti-climactic. But it wasn’t gory or “cozy”, so I will probably try another Penny. From Hoopla. Next week 🤣

Do you have s favorite Louise Penny? I know she is very popular!
