Photo by @andreabruce In an Indian village where malnutrition is common, a child sleeps in a swing made from a scarf.
When I covered the issue of sanitation and open defecation for the August issue of National Geographic, the village of Peepli Kheera in India had only one toilet, kept under lock and key by one family. The entire community defecated outside. Men in the fields on one side of the village, women on the other. I revisited the village last month and saw several toilets being built by the government — though building them is only part of the battle.
About half of Indians defecate outside without using toilets. Children pick up parasites and chronic infections that impair the ability of the intestines to absorb nutrients — 117,000 Indian children die each year from diarrhea related to this, according to Unicef. #india #sanitation #children @noorimages

Brittney Beadle (@brittneybeadle) does not put off anything for tomorrow. “Do it now,” she advises. “Live in the moment and enjoy your life.” In May 2015, Brittney was diagnosed with metastatic (stage 4) breast cancer, at the age of 18. “I felt I was alone,” Brittney says. “There are some young women in their 20s who I found, but still no one who was “my age” young, with breast cancer.”
By sharing her journey, she hopes to help others in a similar position. “Whenever I have to go through a new treatment that’s really hard — like when I had radiation to my brain — I think, ‘OK. Yes, this sucks. I have to do this. But you know what? I get to live.’” #BreastCancerAwareness

This iconic tree produces welcome shade in the extreme temperatures of Australia, but it also has an ominous nickname, "widow maker", as they have a habit of dropping large boughs without warning. They provide welcome nest hollows for native wildlife and may live for 700 years! #Penfolds magic is founded in the diverse and rich wine regions of South Australia, where every bottle starts its story. I’ve been quiet on Instagram the last several days because I’ve been very sick. I’m in Salta, Argentina and I came down with a very bad cold when I was in Patagonia. I was caught out in the rain while hiking on a glacier. Toss in the cold temperatures and high winds and viola!……sick.

I’m attending the Adventure Travel World Summit here in Salta and when not at the event, I’ve spent almost all my time in my hotel room sleeping and trying to recover.

End result? Not a lot of activity on Instagram.

I’m feeling much better now, however. Still have a bit of a cough, but other than that, the major symptoms are gone.

I’m here in Salta for 3 more nights and then I head back to US. I’ll be home in Minneapolis for 6 days before I head to Portland, Oregon for another conference. After that I head to London for what I hope will be my last big conference of the year. If you are in Portland or London, let me know if you’d like to meet up.

Nothing like hiking the Swiss alps in the middle of the night and getting lost for 4hrs w/ iPhone flashlights to lead the way and still managing to end up here 5 min before sunrise 🌄 Thanks to my brother @linomeoli for following me on this amazing Swiss adventure, wouldn't have been the same without you fam. Tip: If you plan to hike from Zermatt to Stellisee for sunrise do not follow the google maps🚶🏽directions!!! Prob a bad idea for any hike 😅

Hydra by night. A perfect long weekend getaway. In mid-September, the heat backs off and the water is still warm. A long trek or two gives good coverage of the island. Food is excellent, especially if fish and seafood are your thing and you don't mind feta, local cheeses, and Greek wine. Throw in an afternoon boat ride along the southwestern shore, a few dips in the Gulf of Hydra, some late afternoon strolls and a lie-in or two and you'll have the makings for a perfect shoulder/mid-season break.
