4. Charlotte Hornets. I gave Charlotte a C-. Charlotte have been one of those teams who haven’t been good enough to make the playoffs, but not bad enough to get a good draft pick over the last few years. They did nothing to change that this offseason. When they traded Dwight Howard for Timofey Mozgov, we all expected them to trade Kemba Walker and kick-start a rebuild. Why would you trade your 2nd best player if you’re not rebuilding?
-Charlotte signed Tony Parker, who is well past his prime and is only fit for mentoring a young Point Guard. Kemba Walker is in his prime why does he need mentoring from Tony Parker??? -The Hornets, after trading Dwight Howard (an excellent center still playing at a high level) for Timofey Mozgov, who is unplayable and earning $18million a year, then traded Mozgov for two 2nd round picks. This made sense, as they dumped Mozgov’s contract and didn’t take on any extra salary. But they effectively traded Dwight Howard for two 2nd round picks. WHY?? It just doesn’t make sense to trade him if they weren’t rebuilding. Charlotte genuinely had a shockingly bad offseason.
-The only thing that saved Charlotte was drafting Miles Bridges, a great 3-and-D player who I believe will be a potential All-Star in this league. If not for drafting Bridges, and saving their asses by dumping Mozgov’s contract, Charlotte would have got a big fat F. I think the C- is very generous considering Charlotte didn’t get much better or worse, and will be stuck in the lower half of the lottery without any real shot of making the playoffs again next year.
