ASPARTAME 101👉🏼 First let me just explain what ADI actually means before I go balls deep in here. ADI is basically an intake that someone may be exposed to DAILY over their lifetime without appreciable health risk. So, in terms of aspartame, the FDA has set the ADI for HUMANS at 50mg/kg in the US and 40 mg/kg in Europe (Butchko et.al., 2002) meaning that if you are an average male like @chris_elkins (70kg), you can have ~2800-3500mg/day and still not be exposed to any appreciable health risk however, seeing as 1 can of coke 0 has ~87mg in it, it’s highly likely you still aren’t getting anywhere near the ADI so you really don’t need to worry about any risks at all as your dosages are so low. ➖
Risks, what risks? Well if you don’t already know by now, aspartame is supposedly a one way ticket to developing cancer shown by the many of experiments done in rodents but again, before you put down that diet coke, we need to dive into these studies a little further and see the dosages that were given to said rodents to cause these carcinogenic effects and how they can relate to us and it’s only when we do that we can clearly see that the doses of aspartame required to pose any danger to humans are actually far larger than what any normal person could possibly consume in a day.
Take one study for example (Belpoggi et.al., (2006) which administered rats with 100,000, 50,000, 10,000, 2000, 400, 80, and 0ppm of aspartame. To put that into perspective for you, in human doses that is roughly the equivalent of 5000, 2500, 500, 100, 20, 4, and 0 mg/kg. Results? Increased incidence of malignant tumors, lymphomas, leukemias, transitional cell carcinomas blah blah blah…. All very serious and scary side effects but guys LOOK AT THOSE HUMAN NUMBERS!!!! ➖
100, 500, 2500, 5000mg per day! Of course they found negative consequences. That’s like drinking 57 cans of the coke a day!! Nobody does that! And that’s not the only study that has got their dosages f**ked either because when you look at practically any other study out there on rats, the dosages given are still completely unrealistic to humans, most ranging from 1000-8000mg/kg.
