When you go to visit your ponies to go for a ride, but end up having to play vet instead. 🤦🏼♀️🏥
TL;DR - horses got moved to diet paddock, horses escaped diet paddock, blamed Nikai, was actually Abbey (who injured herself in the process).
On Sunday I moved them into a temporary paddock within their main paddock, as I wanted them to eat it down so that I could just leave Nikai in there as a bit of a diet paddock. I would have made it electric, but the grass along the fence-line was as tall as the fence (which would have shorted out the current), and the whipper-snipper was out of fuel, so I couldn't trim it myself. I figured I had nothing to lose: they would either stay in there, or get out into their main paddock. No big dramas.
On Thursday, I noticed that 3 of them had escaped. I assumed that the 3 that I could see were Abbey, Boofie, and Stewie. I kind of panicked myself into thinking Nikai had gotten himself tangled in the fence... but alas, he, Boofie, and Abbey were the ones who had wriggled free. I went and 'rescued' Stewie (he was totally fine, he just hadn't noticed the broken bit of fence that the rest had escaped through). They all seemed happy, so I left it at that and went home.
Then on Friday (yesterday) I grabbed Abbey and Nikai to have a play. As I was brushing them, I noticed that Abbey was holding her near side hind leg a bit funny, and discovered these cuts... Because Nikai WASN'T the one stuck in the diet paddock, I had just assumed that he was the one to escape first, and the others followed. But by the looks of things, Abbey got her back leg stuck and broke the fence, which let them all out.
The cuts are pretty shallow (the bleeding in the first picture is because I pulled a bit of loose skin, that wasn't quiiite loose enough to be pulled yet. I gave the cuts a wash, lathered them with zinc, and then covered them in purple spray. She wasn't at all lame on it (she happily cantered with the boys when I put them away), I think it just stung a little. She should be all fixed up in a couple of days! But man, horses, amiright?!
