El Mano del Desierto. The hand of the Desert. We rode 225 miles out of our way to visit this sculpture, jutting up from the sand deep in the Atacama desert. When we were preparing for our trip, the image of this hand began to pop up on the internet, on Instagram, and it stuck in our imagination, drawing us towards it. When we drew our route from Bolivia to Argentina, we realized that we would miss the hand, and so drew a new route, through Southwestern Bolivia, into the Atacama of Northern Chile. The rugged detour, drove us to a halt with a broken ICU and has caused a ding in our front bearings, which we will soon need to fix. But we got our photo with the hand. And we are happy we did.
