Let’s continue beverage opener week with some Breweriana - that is, the collection of beer-branded objects such as labels, trays, and of course, bottle openers! This is my personal collection of openers, all from the F. D. Radeke Brewery in Kankakee, Illinois. The Radeke Brewery produced beer from the mid 1890’s until Jan. 1, 1920, when the Volstead Act (which prohibited the manufacture, sale, or consumption of alcoholic beverages) went into effect nationwide. Do you know what the square hole on one opener is for? My Dad told me - I’d have never guessed! Comment if you know! I only collect items from this particular brewery. I think the name has a nice ring to it ;) Beer workers photo is courtesy of the Kankakee County Museum Photo Archive. The six-pointed star on the beer keg is a traditional symbol for product purity, used by German brewers since the Middle Ages.
