A very wonderful birthday to the amazingly talented actress Kristin Scott Thomas! Even from the beginning of her career, the Frenchiest British actress has alternated between English-speaking and French-speaking productions. She has even stated that she sometimes considers herself more French than English. Here she can be seen alongside designer Karl Lagerfeld in Francis Veber’s “La Doublure” (“The Valet,” 2006). The film also stars Gad Elmaleh, Daniel Auteuil, and Alice Taglioni.

To Kill a Mockingbird (1962)
B&W? Gregory Peck, the man from Roman Holiday? Classic movies are always discouraging to me given my inability to absorb an unfamiliar cultural context and my fear of boredom. This is just one demonstration of my judgmental self, bad habits of selective exposure and laziness.

To Kill a Mockingbird is another classic eye-opener I almost missed for binging Friends. Atticus Finch, a white middle-class defense lawyer in the racist and poverty-stricken South during the Great Depression, defended an African-American alleged to have raped a white lady. Emotional delivery at court and brutal testimonies however are not the main themes of this film.
Rather, we learn the way of life through the world Atticus’ kids lived in. They were haunted by tales of the maniac living next door, who was after all a deathly figure these bored kids imagined creatively from gossips and Southern insults. At school, they got teased for their father’s stupid job in defending a black man who definitely lacked morals and self-control of libido. They tried to understand the adults’ world despite their mother’s absence.
Just like that, the movie was culturally rich and heartfelt by mockingbird’s association with children’s innocence.

'Anon' Micro-Review: While there are some interesting sci-fi concepts explored in this film, it's nothing that we haven't seen before in series like 'Ghost in the Shell.' While it is relatively good, it drags at bits and feels like it would be better suited as a 'Black Mirror' episode rather than a feature length film.

🎈 Here is the Star Wars countdown 5-2 👍🏻 🎬
5. Rogue One - A Star Wars spin off that has stoked the anticipation for Solo. A solid action flick set in everyone’s favourite galaxy.
⭐️
4. Episode VIII The Last Jedi - a truly wonderful cinematic spectacle that develops the great characters portrayed in The Force Awakens. Some amazing set pieces and memorable battles.
💫
3. Episode VII The Force Awakens - Heavily inspired by the original Star Wars but exactly what the franchise needed after the poor prequels. Rey, Finn, Kylo Ren, Po and BB8 are all brilliant new characters complemented by a heavy scoop of nostalgia.
🌑
2. Episode IV A New Hope - The one that started it all, in an era of sci-fi, Star Wars took the world by storm. Lucas created an everlasting universe that has influenced and inspired generations.

☆Give each film a unique style: As a cinematographer, part of your job is capturing the director's vision for the project, but the other part is figuring out the style. #Deakins #quotes DP Freddie Francis when he says that there's "good cinematography and bad cinematography and then there's the #cinematography that's right for the #movie." ☆Use references for inspiration: The world is full of things to draw inspiration from. Look at films and paintings, talk to different kinds of people, read all sorts of books, magazines, and articles, and really study everything around you.Roll with the punches: Things never go as planned when shooting a movie, so rolling with the punches and adapting to change is one of a cinematographer's greatest assets. ☆Keep an open mind: Embrace "happy accidents" and allow yourself to learn from new things. ☆Operate the camera: If you're the one operating the camera, it gives you the ability to react to what's going on during the shot. ☆Embrace intimacy: Even though the tool you use to do your work is humongous and intrusive, what it has the potential to capture is something incredibly intimate. So, find ways to "get closer" to your subjects, whether that's by using certain lenses or moving your camera closer.

The two issues for this month of TF and Empire! Summer blockbuster season is in full force, especially with the release of Deadpool 2, already a favorite of mine that somehow managed to surpass the original, and JP: Fallen Kingdom, whose director J.A.Bayona promised us a darker, scarier entry into the franchise. Lots of interesting interviews in between. Enjoy!

The Villainess | Movie Review

Clear drawn inspirations. The plot of The Villainess has elements that work and elements that don’t. The general storyline calls to mind the obvious influences of films like Le Femme Nikita, Leon the Professional, and Kill Bill, while many of the characters band connective plot-tissue are underwhelming. The central character is fleshed out just enough for the audience to root for her through all her trials and tribulations, and it’s always great to see a badass female in an action role. The assassin mentor played by Ha-Kyun Shin, and the intelligence chief played by Seo-Hyeong Kim are by far the most interesting characters and provide the two strongest performances of the film while many of the supporting characters feel lacking in depth and at times in performance. Side characters come and go without leaving much of an impression which is especially troubling given the substantial screen time given to minor characters.

3.5/5 Stars

Shadow of the Vampire. Funky little horror fictionalizing F. W. Murnau’s process in making Nosferatu where Max Schreck really is a vampire, or just REALLY good at method acting, but in any case he’s destroyed by his scene ending, only living till he has no more scenes to shoot, or I think that’s how it goes? Messed up kind of movie.

But let’s just talk about how great these actors are: John Malkovich, Cary Elwes, Udo Kier, and Willem DaFoe. 4 of my favourite actors all in one movie. They’re always there just doing small and interesting films. Never A list but everyone loves them like A listers. Especially DaFoe. Can’t help but smile whenever he’s on screen.

And Udo. Wonderful wonderful Udo. Here’s a story: Astron-6. You know them? They made small little horror spoofs like Manborg, Father’s Day, and The Editor. Well they’re Winnipeg boys like moi, so one day they gave a little talk in my film class at uni. Just talked about how Troma screwed them over and how difficult it was making The Editor. But one thing I... remember, was when they said they had 2 completely opposite actor types. They said Paz de la Huerta was the worst, just a total diva, refused to work on days, just taking total advantage of their small production because she used to be on a semi-big show once. But when they worked with Udo Kier, there was no air conditioning, and the small room they were filming in was getting hot, problems kept delaying the scene, so everyone is sweating, even poor Udo waiting for everything to be set, but they said he couldn’t have been more nice and patient and understanding. They had nothing but nice things to say about Udo. I always knew he must have been a great guy, so I was so happy to hear that story. #nowwatching #cinephile #lovemovies #cinema #movies #movie #film #cinephilecommunity #shadowofthevampire #horror #horrormovies #nosferatu #vampire #johnmalkovich #caryelwes #udokier #willemdafoe

Terminal | Movie Review
Who says that mystery is a dead art? Imagine you’re watching a film where a man and a woman meet in a park and talk the whole time. Every now and then we cut to a dog sitting and staring at the two, its long tongue licking its lips in assumed hunger. In the climactic scene, the man reveals to the woman that he’s actually a werewolf and will now eat her. While this reveal is quite drastic and clearly recontextualizes the situation for the woman, the audience is not going to be engaged and surprised by this reveal so much as wryly taken aback. There was no information throughout the film that would have to lead the audience to possibly think the man might be a werewolf, and if the hungry dog was supposed to allude to anything it did a piss poor job of doing so. Yet, this example has greater information and suggested motive than the script for Terminal is capable of delivering.

Unnai Pol Oruvan (2009) is one of those films where once you’re done watching it, you’ll prolly sit up and wonder out aloud why there aren’t more films like this? A police commissioner gets an anonymous phone call from a caller who claims to have planted many bombs around a city. In exchange for information about the bombs, he demands 4 high-level militants to be released from custody. The entire film rests on the heavy dialogues between Kamal Hassan and Mohanlal and it was very interesting to see how there was an equal power to both their words. No one had the drop on the other and it felt like a fast-paced tennis match. The theme of the movie is to explore the common man’s angst. There’s a lot of truth in the intellectual battle between the two, and much of it has to do with how numb society has become towards extreme crimes. Kamal Hassan’s monologue towards the end of the film is bone-chilling and it deserves a standing ovation. Performance-wise, Mohanlal was excellent in his role as the commissioner. His aura was powerful and there was never any doubt on his capabilities as a lawman. Kamal Hassan has a huge role and he hit it out of the Ballpark. There are alot of clever dialogues from him that he pulls off with ease. The film talks about harsh realities that are happening all across the world but what it takes a stand for are the harsher penalties that should be employed as solutions. Fighting fire with Fire. As a concept, while it may not be ethically or morally feasible in reality, works well in this film. Just like the audience that was seated around me, I found myself reflecting and deep in thought. Unnai Pol Oruvan (2009), fantastic. 5/5! 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿

REVIEW
.

VIETNAM (2017): Can Kenny Burns make a bad documentary? Let’s see… THE RUNDOWN: An epic telling of the war we know as NAM. Honestly, I can’t think of any reason how or why Ken Burns cannot rock a documentary. They are also so deep and sexy. I’m only on episode 5, so I think I have 13 more to go. BUT DAMN – this boy teaches as he preaches. Have a friend that didn’t even know about the French connection in Vietnam. Sure they don’t even know about the act of 1781. So far it is quality, not as good as the civil war doc. I might be a little bias on this one, had 2 uncles fight in this war, which means I have some unwarranted hatred. But this thing is all the shit kids *****5 STARS*****

From the Criterion Collection comes 1988's Best Foreign Language Film Oscar winner Babette's Feast, a film by Gabriel Axel adapted from a story by Isak Dinesen (Out of Africa). This is the "lovingly layered tale of a French housekeeper with a mysterious past who brings quiet revolution in the form of one exquisite meal to a circle of starkly pious villagers in late nineteenth century Denmark". Criterion have put together a beautiful digipak presentation here which includes a 64 page booklet and a 1995 documentary about Isak Dinesen (aka Karen Blixen).

From Shout Factory horror offshoot Scream Factory comes the 1971 portmanteau thriller The House That Dripped Blood. Directed by Peter Duffell (England Made Me) and with a screenplay by Psycho scribe Robert Bloch. The titular house is the framework for four separate stories of terror featuring Britain's horror greats Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee & Ingrid Pitt. With hi-def video and audio and a small selection of extras this is one for horror buffs

2017 Films Ranked (5 - 2)
________________________________
#5 - Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri - 9.8/10:
The great merit of this film is the balance. Not overly comedic, not overly dramatic. A dark-comedy-crime story that can "entertain" while stating its poignant theme. Extremely well balanced also in the time given to each main character to shine. And they DO shine.

#4 - Good Time - 9.5/10:
There's always a little, peculiar gem that stands out. While it borrows elements from other vaguely similar movies, Good Time absolutely leaves a mark with it's style and story, which is much more than it seems to be superficially.

#3 - The Shape of Water - 10/10:
A perfect grade for a film that, for me, feels perfect. It might not BE perfect, but its aura of beauty, sentiment and even technical exceptionality made it all-around great. It is sweet, and yet strange and somewhat scary. It is an out-of-reality fantasy, but still maintains a human touch that speaks to the soul.

#2 - It Comes At Night - 10/10:
If I said that Good Time is a little gem, then this is diamond dust. Extremely small and confined, It Comes At Night is much more a psychological thriller than a horror film, that still scares with a gradative paranoia and a growing sense of urgency. Another great film from the recent wave of modern horror (although I said it doesn't exactly belongs to that genre).
