Oshun is a Yoruban Orisha, which is a spirit that manifests as one of the supreme divinities (Eledumare, Olorun, or Olofri). Oshun is the primary wife of Shango, an Orisha, who governs thunder, lightning, justice, dance, and virility. His other wife is Oya.
She is the patron saint of the Osun River in Nigeria and she is honoured for 2 weeks during the Osun-Osogbo Festival. Oshun is the Goddess of the rivers and other fresh bodies of water, pleasure, sexuality, fertility, luxury and also destiny + divination.
Like many other African Goddesses, Oshun made her way to the New World via the horrific Atlantic Slave Trade. Thus, she is also known as Ochún and Oxúm in Latin America. She is associated with the colour gold or deep yellow in the New World and white, yellow and green in Nigeria.
Her devotees leave offerings of pennies and honey at rivers, streams, canals, and brooks. The women dedicated to her are said to walk and dance in a sensual way that can't be mimicked and is mesmerizing.
