Italia 90, Czech ☑️ __________
I've been on the hunt for this shirt for my Italia '90 collection for a long time. Still got so many to tick off though, including the away version of this, anyone?
The shirt has that fascinating 1990 mix of stunning design and political intrigue caused by the end of the Cold War.
The double-tailed lion of Bohemia was the symbol of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic and had featured on the nations shirts since 1960.
The fall of communism meant that in April 1990 the nation adopted a new name, the Czech and Slovak Federative Republic. They kept the name Czechoslovakia for football for the time being but the coat of arms was gone and instead they now played with the national flag on their shirts.
This shirt was worn in the 5-1 hammering of the USA in their first match at Italia '90 and the home colours were used by the side in all but one game at the tournament as they reached the quarter finals.
The Soviet Union also wore this design in Italy and the added beauty of the pattern continued on the shorts is just superb.
