As an apex predator the Great White plays a crucial role in the ecosystem by maintaining a balanced food chain and serving as an indicator for healthy and diverse oceans. Great whites are at the top of the marine food chain. They feed predominately on fish but will also consume turtles, molluscs, and crustaceans, and are active hunters of small cetaceans such as dolphins and porpoises, and of other marine mammals such as seals and sea lions. Using their acute senses of smell, sound location and electroreception, weak and injured prey can be detected from a great distance.
Fishing and finning threat the existence of these magnificent animals. By taking sharks out of the coral reef ecosystem, the larger predatory fish, such as groupers, increase in abundance and feed on the herbivores. With less herbivores, macroalgae expands and coral can no longer compete, shifting the ecosystem to one of algae dominance, affecting the survival of the reef system.
