Okay, so who has gotten a chance to try any of those Japanese whiskys out there?! I was lucky to be gifted a bottle of Toki, a Suntory whisky, to give a whirl and I have to say it’s something like nothing else out there! It is so reminiscent of a scotch, but with a much kinder body, leaving nice sweet notes that linger calmly rather than bite like a bourbon.
I would recommend this whisky to anyone who is a whiskey fan in general. It meets the palate right in the middle, where you get such an easy drink that doesn’t overwhelm you with flavor. With its ease, yet complexity, I created the Suntory Tea.
2 oz @suntorywhisky Toki
.5 oz lemon juice
.5 oz Goji Green Tea Demorara Syrup*
2 chunks muddled ginger
1 oz water
1 oz tonic
Muddle ginger with goji syrup, then add whisky and lemon. Shake over ice, double strain into Collins glass. Top with water and tonic. Garnish with freshly sliced ginger. •
Goji Green Tea Syrup
Make a demorara simple syrup mix of half sugar and half hot water. Bring to a boil and reduce heat, adding fresh green Tea leaves and dried goji berries. Brew until bitterness of the green tea has come through.
