Singing 'Haneshama Lach' with Rabbi Senter in one of the barracks of Berkenau. Our guide had finished explaining some of the horrors that took place here and as the crowd left Rabbi Senter pulled me back to sing a song to ourself. Thank you Shloimy Cherns for catching this moment.

#atrocities #concentrationcamp #auswitchz #poland #openyoureyes #history

Its been a while since we've looked at the visitation numbers for Manzanar National Historic Site (@manzanarnps), and once again, there's great news.
.
Manzanar NHS drew 11,083 visitors in September 2017, compared to 9,795 in September 2016. 11,083 is also a new record for the month of September.
.
October went in the exact same direction. 10,465 people visited Manzanar last month, compared to 9,190 in October 2016. Last month's numbers were also a new record for the month of October.
.
Manzanar has set new monthly visitation records in six out of the last seven months.
.
Overall, 103,296 people have visited Manzanar this year. Through the same period in 2016, 94,503 people visited the site. That's an increase of 8.5 percent.
.
Manzanar NHS set a new annual visitation record last year, with 105,307 visitors. With two more months to go in 2017, it would seem to be a foregone conclusion that another new annual visitation record will be set this year, as well.

A Day in the History-
24th November 1943

7 prisoners were sent to the Penal Company. 3 of them were sent there until further notice and the rest was sent there for 6 months.

Izydor Dobraszklanka (prisoner 142765) was sent there until further notice. He was killed there on 1st December 1943, only eight days after.

In the picture you can see a painting by Władysław Siwek - former Auschwitz prisoner - 'The return of the Penal Company'. The pic is the courtesy of the National Archives.

Happy Thanksgiving, my fellow Americans, and happy Thursday to everyone else!

I’m grateful for so many things, but I’m always thankful for men and women who give us stories of the worst times in humanity. It’s easy to forget how lucky we are until we remember how much we have to lose.

I finished Rose Under Fire last week and found it heartbreaking and hopeful. It may be a work of fiction, but many people suffered horribly in Nazi concentration camps, and Rose’s experiences are a reminder of those atrocities. They’re also a reminder of how people can come together to fight back against true evil, and stories like these give me hope for a brighter tomorrow.

“Arbeit macht frei” means “work makes you free”
It was used by the Nazi to deceive prisoners to work hard in order to trade for their freedom, but their will never know no matter how hard they work, they are gonna die finally.

Q&A with our Followers

@eoinoconnor84 asked us a question under one of the recent posts:

Was every (or most) person who was murdered there given a death certificate? Seem so strange that the nazis would issue certificates in the circumstances.

The death certificates would be issued only when a registered Auschwitz prisoner died - every person who was given the prisoner number. The families of people killed in the gas chambers would not get such documents. The certificates were issued by the SS-doctors working in Auschwitz when the prisoner died.  Each death certificate consists of the deceased persons full name, profession and religion, date and place of birth, pre-Auschwitz residence, parents names, time of death, cause of death and a camp physicians signature. Sometimes it also gives the name of the parents.  The existing death certificates are mainly from the years, 1942 and 1943. There is a little documentation from the year 1941, none from the year 1944, nor from January 1945 (when Auschwitz was evacuated). The death certificates record the names of 68,864 individuals, who died at Auschwitz (Birkenau), of whom about 30,000 were listed as Jews.
In the pictures you can see  a death certificate for Antoni Borodajko - Auschwitz prisoner 27475 who was deported to Auschwitz with his son Aleksander on 28th March 1942. Pic is the courtesy of the National Archives.

Speranza e animo...
