Our Planet is truly grand. There are so many incredibly unique and intelligent sentient beings on Earth besides humans is there not… Yet for every 1 thing going right there seems to be 100 things going wrong. I am not trying to be negative, rather I just care very much about the current crisis confronting much of this planet’s biodiversity… I feel a responsibility to speak up, forgive me… We might think that a species like this desert bighorn sheep is fine, but let’s not ever forget the shifting baselines. While spending a good bit of time with them I unfortunately saw firsthand how far too many are suffering from acute pneumonia, a dreaded disease that is spread by domestic sheep. Populations from Colorado to California are suffering from this horrible illness. According to the department of Fish and Wildlife “the bacteria causing pneumonia in bighorns are not native to North America, and thus bighorns have not had evolutionary time to adapt to it.” Not all that long ago, I even reported some observations I had to a friend of mine, who specializes in bighorn sheep research - a population of bighorns that were thought safe on one side of the Colorado River were actually now suffering from this pneumonia as well. It’s heartbreaking to see whole herds of these magnificent animals trying to survive and then having to fight that much harder... (3/3)

“For the first time since the demise of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago, we face a global mass extinction of wildlife. We ignore the decline of other species at our peril – for they are the barometer that reveals our impact on the world that sustains us. Humanity’s misuse of natural resources is threatening habitats, pushing irreplaceable species to the brink and threatening the stability of our climate. We know how to stop this. It requires governments, businesses and citizens to rethink how we produce, consume, measure success and value the natural environment.” - Mike Barrett, Director of Science and Policy at WWF-UK

@Regran_ed from @nakaweproject - Ever seen one of these funny looking pouches? Did you know that it is actually a shark egg!?
.
Around 30% of shark and ray species are oviparous, meaning that they reproduce by laying eggs that develop outside the body of the mother. Shark and ray eggs are particularly distinguishable because of the large protective casing around the egg. The shape and size of the case is different depending on the species though. Egg cases from various species are often nicknamed 'mermaid’s purses' because of their pouch-like shape - but egg cases from Port Jackson sharks are very distinguishable because of their unique spiral shape!
.
This video from @sanibelseaschool shows a tiny shark fetus developing inside the egg case. These may sometimes wash ashore on beaches, so if you find one containing a fetus it’s best to return it to the water as quickly (and gently) as you can!

Presenting 'Different values of environment across the world' in Conservation Biology class at University of Florida. Emphasizing on the important of religions and cultures in conservation we showed the case of Bajau people through the TEDtalk of Kellie Swazey and part of the documentary film 'Our Land is the Sea'. So happy to see enthusiastic faces and hand clapping from the students after the presentation. When I said, we can have the film makers to speak at UF, they looked more enthusiastic. So @kelli_swazey and @mcolaciello, the University of Florida is waiting for you. The professor would be happy to have you as guest speakers in her spring class 😁😀

Every November the Nature Conservancy rounds up over 2500 Bison on it’s Tallgrass Prairie Preserve in Oklahoma. The animals are counted, given an overall exam and inoculated for disease. The calves, like this one, are examined on a day separate from the adults. The excess animals, which the Preserve can’t support, are sold off at this time; usually around 600. The Tallgrass Prairie Preserve is truly a gem on the Prairie.

When I see the bones of extinct creatures like dinosaurs it only makes me wonder what creatures that exist today won’t exist as the future generations come into the world. We have been charged as the guardians of this planet whether we want to be or not. We must do what we can to keep endangered species from tipping into the extinct column. Use less plastic, vote for environmental protections, plant more trees, do your best to research companies you’re supporting and their environmental habits, drive an electric car—I don’t check off everything in that list but I’m consciously working at it. I’ll take a breath and step down from my soap box, but it’s honestly something I think of often—the pain we humans are causing this planet. It will take all of us making changes to have a chance to rectify it 🌻

Among the storks species, Storm’s stork (Ciconia stormi) is regarded as a rare one. It is estimated that there are 400 to 500 of them in Borneo. Check out this incredible creature with its wing spread out taken by Charlie!
.
“Storm's stork. If you have visited the eastern side of Sabah and saw this bird, it was most likely the rarest species you saw on your entire trip. With less than 500 remaining in the wild, the majority of the population is around the Kinabatangan River and Way Kambas in Sumatra."

This playful little rhino is an orphan called Nandi. Her mother was killed by poachers, and now she is cared for at @therhinoorphanage with the hope that one day she may be re-released back into the wild. Thanks to orphanages like these, animals such as Nandi will get a second chance at life after such a harsh beginning.

This is a photo of Kahle, a massive elephant bull, being transported to a wake up box to be woken up and loaded into a transporter truck. Kahle and a companion named Mvula were translocated by ERP, from Phinda Private Game Reserve to Samara Private Game Reserve, during this past weekend. The rhinos were looking on in astonishment at the sight of the large bull being transported (all rhino in Phinda have been dehorned).⁣

The capture process started at 06:00 on Saturday the 17th November and was completed by 09:30, with the bulls starting their mammoth journey to Samara. The capture entailed a vet darting the bulls from a helicopter with a ground crew responding to stabilise the elephants once they were immobilised. A flat bed crane truck was then used to load the bulls and transport them to a wake up box. The elephants were loaded upside down by their feet which is a perfectly safe method of loading. The elephants were then woken up in the wake up box and transferred to a large transporter truck which was used to transport the elephants across three provinces.⁣

The elephants were safely released, 24 hours after being loaded in a joint operation between Samara Private Game Reserve and ERP.⁣

We will be sharing footage of the release tomorrow.⁣

At #ERP, the life of every elephant and rhino matters. ⁣For more information on what we do, visit the link in our bio.

💙🐋 LOVE this from @styngvi - Did you know that the more whales there are the more life there is in the oceans? A common misconception is that we need to hunt whales in order to keep the fish stock larger. Although some whales eat up to 4 tonnes of sealife every day, removing whales from the ocean would result in even less fish.
▪️
Whales play such an important role in the eco-system. They create currents and bring nutrients from the bottom of the ocean up to the surface. They also poop A LOT which provides plankton and other life in the ocean with important nutrients and when they die naturally they sink to the bottom of the ocean and provide life down there with feed.
▪️
Whales also act like a carbon sink and help fight climate change. They store a lot of carbon in their huge bodies and when they die naturally they take all of that carbon with them to the bottom of the ocean where it won't be released into the atmosphere. When whales are hunted and cut open all of that carbon is released. It is estimated that about 110 million tons of carbon has been released from the past 100 years of whaling (not including the emissions from the boats).
▪️
Humans definitely don't need to eat whales to survive so why is whaling still happening in the world? It is so damaging to the eco-system and it has a reverse effect of what is more commonly thought. The more whales there are, the more fish. Simple as that! 🐟🐳🐟
