Iris oraroria, also known as the Mediterranean or iris mantis.
The interaction went something like this:
Me: Hey little guy, that camouflage of yours is pretty useless on that step, what were you thinking?
Mantis: ... Me: Look, we're just gonna relocate you to somewhere more suitable. *picks up with leaflet*
Mantis: ... Me: There ya go, nice plant off the path.
Mantis: 🤔 Oh heyyyyy thanks y'all, this is actually much better.
Mantids have 6 legs just like any other insect but the first two are enlarged and adapted for catching prey (known as raptorial forelegs). Prey can sometimes include other unfortunate mantis (often after mating, this is known as sexual cannibalism 😱). The colour of this species can vary between shades of brown and green but they are always well camouflaged and stay incredibly still (until some meddling humans come and move them), this is their way of hunting whilst simultaneously avoiding predation. 🌿🌵
