I have wanted to cover this classic for years. The horror genre has never been my forte, but I wanted to stretch my tribute writer legs a bit. In this reimagining of The Shining, I was able to capture the haunting essence of King’s novel, while still maintaining my own personal style and integrity. I may have hit a nerve with some of his diehard fans, but as a serious cover author, there is a need to take risks and grow as an artist. I'm proud of this book, considering that I never read the original and I haven't seen the movie version in over 35 years. Somehow it all came back to me like the flooding of a blood-filled elevator.
My literary agent gave Stephen King an advance copy this summer. I didn't know if King would read it, but just last week I received a hand-written note from him. It simply said: "Scott, I have to be honest with you. I didn't think you could pull it off. But after I read the first few pages, I was hooked. I don't think I've ever read something so beautiful and yet horrifying in my entire life. Your version of my story brought tears to my eyes. Congratulations, my kindred spirit!"
Wow! I couldn't believe my eyes. A hand-written note of praise from the King of Horror himself. I was speechless. I had no words. At least none of my own.
