India is a secular state with no state religion. 70% of the population practices Hinduism 14% Islam and the other 6% adheres to other religions: Sikhism, Buddhism, Judaism,Janism, Zoroastrianism and Christianity. The last one is the 3rd largest religion in India. That being said current leadership does not believe in a secular country, They make decisions just for their own religion, Hinduism. They decided to change the name of the Iconic “Bombay” into Mumbai which its origins come from a Hindu God. As a very complex country with different religions and different kind of people the opposition does not agree (you can imagine how complex is to make a decision in India on behalf of “all the people”). The current city of dreams is still called “Bombay” from the opposition.
