After getting a copy of @deathandcompany cocktail book for inspiration, I did not have to read for long before finding a really cool low-proof cocktail, the Aperitivo Julep. This inspired the following cocktail.
2 oz Dry Vermouth
0.75 oz California Fernet
2 Bar spoons Dimmi
Garnish with Mint in copper cup.
I sometimes find myself in a rut where I keep making the same kind of drinks because I know how much I like them. So I love it when I come across a recipe that strikes me as a similar and yet different to ones I know.
I saw first saw this - posted by @fredericyarm a few days ago - I read Mezcal with Cynar and thought…oh yeah…and then the dry vermouth and St. Germain sort of threw me a bit. And my first thought was “I could tweak that…” That’s when I knew I had to reshake this as written. You have to go outside the comfort zone of your known and well-established preferences if you want to discover anything new.
I’m so glad I did! If you sip this too quickly, you will get mezcal up front and miss the rest. Slow down, and a parade of flavors will march across your palate - with the marchers rearranging themselves with each sip as the cocktail warms. And you, like me, might happily remember that there are more things to love than what we already know! .
Even better, this was created by @melliemixes Mellie Wiersma as a tribute to a Navy Seal who came out as a transgender female and is published in the new book “Drinking Like Ladies: 75 Modern Cocktails from the World’s Leading Female Bartenders,” by @kirstenamann and @mhibiscus

Ready for our Cocktail of the Day?! It's a Paloma. But no, not with tequila.
Conniption Navy Strength gin plays so amazing with fresh ruby red grapefruit. Get ready to relax and dream of being beach-side with this cocktail. Cheers!
1.5 oz. Conniption Navy Strength Gin
1 oz. Ruby Red Grapefruit juice
1/2 - 3/4 oz. simple syrup
2 - 3 oz. Cold Club Soda
Rosemary and grapefruit garnish
Shake gin, juice and simple syrup with ice. Strain into chilled glass with ice. Top with club soda, stir and garnish.
If you want more oils of the rosemary to release into the cocktail, take a few rosemary pieces and put them in the shaker during the first step.
I'm too late for negroni week, but here's my wild, woodsy take on the classic negroni anyway!
I swapped out the traditional Campari for my less bitter black walnut tincture made with aromatic, green walnuts. Plus a little of the birch sap which I tapped in spring and reduced down to a precious few tablespoons of wonderfully woodsy syrup.
The ice sphere is a strong, smokey coffee - another tree product - with chocolate and spice notes. As the sphere slowly melted, the coffee's flavour complemented the negroni and the unusual liquorice flavour of the birch sap syrup.
I'm pleased with this tree-flavoured tipple!

Gin Spotlight Sunday! Each Sunday of summer you'll meet a member of the Sage Gin Selection! Here is a dry gin made with genever in mind, but with a distinctly Oregonian terroir from @ransomspirits. Beautifully botanical with the unique inclusion of Marionberry and local hops, it's perfect neat, with tonic, or in cocktails.

Nick and I love a good craft spirit and @sutherlanddistilling in Livermore did not disappoint! The ranch we stayed at last night makes the wheat that goes into their Wheat Whiskey (so of course we bought a bottle)!

Thursday is like basically almost the weekend... riiiiight?
Made, what I call, Hot Mamas for Mother's Day last weekend and they were so good we're going to be mixing them up again this weekend. They are pink, tangy, and got a bit of a kick in em. ️ Used @bemixed Ginger Lime mixer as the base and a bit of freshly squeezed pink grapefruit juice to make them a delicious sugar free cocktail. Goodbye sugary drink hangover!
