Ideally we want to see a stable stacked position when the barbell is overhead, so you could draw a fairly straight line from the bar, through the arms and down the torso, or even a slightly braced extension as you can see Max is using with his jerk🏋🏼‍♀️

Often we find people develop mid back stiffness which starts a cascade of problems that affects your overhead mobility and lifting technique.❌
.
This leaves you 2 options (Demo’d by 2x Olympian Chad Vaughn): first you’ll push the barbell forward (leaving you off balance and causing you to miss many lifts forward). In an effort to combat this and keep the lift alive, you’ll see the second option of over arching the low back (notice how the mid back didn’t change at all during this compensation).❌

Here’s a helpful exercise to improve thoracic spine mobility in a way that relates to overhead barbell lifts (demo’d by former USA gymnast Dave Durante). Assume an assisted hand stand position against a wall. Slide down the wall as you rock forward, before then pushing up and into the wall (feeling a good stretch in your mid back). Make sure to keep your core braced during this movement so you don’t arch the back on your press back to the wall.✅

I really like that workout. I‘m happy with my score..but I‘m gonna redo it tomorrow.
I‘m not redoing every open workout. Didn‘t redo 19.3 cause I was too scared to injure. It wasn‘t worth trying due to the fact that I‘m not taking the open super serious this time.

Every year during the CrossFit open I read so many negative posts about REDO‘s - here my thought about it:
First of all - it‘s everyones personal choice to redo or redon‘t a workout. Don‘t ever say that people are stupid if they do (I read that). Don‘t say people are not enjoying CrossFit if they are redoing open workouts. That‘s BS.
I tell all my athletes to redo the workouts if they feel good and didn‘t rip their hands.
Why? Cause you learn so much about your performance, about pacing, about how to attack workouts. Make a video, analyse it! Figure out where you should rest longer, find out where you can shave off some seconds! Always make sure you gave it your all and there is nothing left in the tank! If you wanna grow as an athlete it will help you!
If you wouldn‘t enjoy it - then don‘t. Fair enough! But I see people redoing workouts cause to them it matters to be number 176 in their country or number 172..I like that! That also motivates me!

The weirdest argument I often hear is „In a live event you also only have one try“. True, smarty pants. But this is an online qualifier. You can do it more often.

If you redo workouts after analysing it will also help you pacing workouts in a live competition.

What‘s the saying: if you aren‘t injured then redo workouts! You will grow. Analysing workouts is a CrossFit skill..like a muscle up.
If you don‘t wanna redo - fine too! Not stupid either.
Don‘t judge people if they wanna redo..don‘t make them feel stupid or bad only cause you don‘t wanna redo.
