Its all about that click: one of the key points of a saya is that its not just an open ended box that the knife can fall out of. Thats bad for your toes. The knife has to be secure. There are many ways of doing this. A soft inner liner that slightly grips it, a peg at the back that traps it in, a tie or strap of some sort across the back, or a friction fit on the case itself. I chose a 'simple' (its not simple) friction fit. This gently pinches the blade and spine of the knife, not the sides, on a soft surface that wont dull the blade much. In my case, blobs of epoxy in the gap, cut down to the peefect size. The softness of the epoxy and its elasticity gives an amazing fit without damaging the blade. The knife feels locked in there and doesnt rattle, but slides in and out with a sublte soft click. Its tactile and satisfying. Also if it ever loosens with time and sharpening, another blob can be added and fettled.
