Much of the floor of the Danakil Depression is covered by salt flats. #ethiopia🇪🇹 Selfie with my GoPro camera in the salt pans of the Denakil Depression!
The Danakil Depression is a Rift Valley. The floor of the Danakil Depression subsides as the rift opens. After millions of years of subsidence, the earth reached 125 meters below sea level. Today, it is the lowest point on Earth and the hottest inhabited place. During summer time temperatures exceed 50 degrees Celsius. During winter time - time of my visit, the temperature was 37-42 degrees Celsius. The recommended time to visit the salt pans was early in the morning ~ 6 am when temperatures were a little lower. However, I could still feel the 🥵 hot wind on my face!
How the salt pans were formed? During the formation of the Danakil Depression, water coming from the Red Sea was overtopped the Danakil Basin, flooding the basin with seawater. Following evaporation, thick deposits of salt maintained under the hot dry climate. #danakil #danakildepression #danakildesert
