I still remember the stares and whispers of my classmates as I walked into my first ballet class at six years old, wearing my thick cable knit tights (the best my family could do at that point in life). I remember one girl asking me “why didn’t you wear normal tights?”. Unfortunately this was learned behavior and it continued the duration of those classes, and was even reinforced by the teacher. I can still hear her telling me not to smile so big, while commenting on how lovely everyone else’s smiles were.
Friends, I am here to tell you that No One Misses A Dream is about so much more than dancing. It’s about helping others recognize their value, and spreading the news that it has nothing to do with external circumstances. Your worth is in your heart. It burns like a fire that will not go out.
We can not always shield ourselves or our loved ones from adversity in this world. But we can allow that adversity to positively fuel our future.
I look back on all of the obstacles that I faced in my early dancing years with nothing but gratitude. Some things could have crushed me- but instead they brought me to a place of understanding.
Today- decades of overcome obstacles and so many victories later, I am so humbled and honored to share with others this charge:
Whoever you are, WHEREVER you are, put on your thick cable knit tights and show up anyway. The world needs you. In the words of my sweet husband “You do you, Boo.”
