Photo by @williamalbertallard // Palermo, Sicily, 1994 // Laundry seems to soar like great birds in flight from lines strung from tenement buildings in an old neighborhood in Palermo. Sicly was a wonderful place for me to document. It’s such a wonderful visual resource with people who aren’t shy of being photographed, full of life and vigor. And the food, oh how good it is!

#followme @williamalbertallard for more images of Sicily and other assignments spanning five decades.

Bring us along as you travel for this Weekend Hashtag Project: #WHPawaywego. Whether you’re going to a faraway place or your own backyard, an adventure awaits.
Take us on a ride. The journey can be the most exciting part of a trip. Capture what’s happening through the window on your road trip, or from your bicycle seat as you pedal through your neighborhood.
Capture the sense of place. It’s often the details that make a location unique, such as perfect ripples on a pond or the long shadows of people walking by in a train station. Think about the special details you’d want to share with friends.
Invite your people to come along. Traveling with family or friends can make an experience totally different than when you fly solo. Show us their personalities (and yours!) with candid selfies and in-the-moment photos and videos.
PROJECT RULES: Please add the #WHPawaywego hashtag only to photos and videos shared over this weekend and only submit your own visuals to the project. If you include music in your video submissions, please only use music to which you own the rights. Any tagged photo or video shared over the weekend is eligible to be featured next week.

Photo by @amivitale. With a heavy heart, I share this news and hope that Sudan's legacy will awaken us to protect this magnificent and fragile planet. On March 19th, wildlife ranger Joseph Wachira, 26 comforted Sudan, the last living male Northern White Rhino left on this planet moments before he passed away. Sudan lived a long, healthy life at the conservancy after he was brought to Kenya from @safari_park_dvur_kralov in the #Czechrepublic in 2009. He died surrounded by people who loved him at @olpejeta after suffering from age-related complications that led to degenerative changes in muscles and bones combined with extensive skin wounds. Sudan has been an inspirational figure for many across the world. Thousands have trooped to Ol Pejeta to see him and he has helped raise awareness for rhino conservation. The two female northern white rhinos left on the planet are his direct descendants. Research into new Assisted Reproductive Techniques for large mammals is underway due to him. The impact that this special animal has had on conservation is simply incredible. And there is still hope in the future that the subspecies might be restored through IVF.
In 2009, I had the privilege of following this gentle hulking creature on his journey from the snowy Dvur Krulov zoo in the Czech Republic to the warm plains of Kenya, when he was transported with three of his fellow Northern White Rhinos in a last ditch effort to save the subspecies. It was believed that the air, water, and food, not to mention room to roam, might stimulate them to breed—and the offspring would then be used to repopulate Africa. At the time, there were 8 Northern white rhinos alive, all in zoos. Today, we are witnessing the extinction of a species that had survived for millions of years but could not survive mankind. Follow @olpejeta and @amivitale to learn more what we can all do to #coexist.

[ #BreakingBarriers ] My Daughter | Photograph by Angela Amen (@angieam3)

#YourShotPhotographer Angela Amen made this image of her daughter while digging through boxes for a yard sale, where they found the light casting the shadows. She writes, ‘Every day I wake up and watch this little curious creature figure out how the world works.’ I think nurturing that curiosity in young women is what changes this world and feeds a fire that cannot be put out.
The images I chose to feature this month celebrate female-identifying Your Shot photographers telling a visual story of empowerment, the freedom and flexibility of womanhood, photographers and their images #BreakingBarriers whether it’s identifying women’s issues in their images or a beautiful landscape or underwater image.” — @natgeoyourshot Associate Photo Editor Kristen McNicholas (@kemcnicholas)

March is #WomensHistoryMonth and to honor the women in our community and around the globe, @natgeoyourshot Associate Photo Editor Kristen McNicholas curated 31 Your Shot images that celebrates women to be featured each day this month. #natgeowomen
