This is a story that began in 1972. #matchbox created a #ford #mustang casting & called it Boss Mustang. It was released as MB44 in the range & was yellow with a black opening bonnet/hood. Loosely based on a 1st generation '71 Boss 351 with flared nostrils, they also decided to expose the engine out of the top & add side exhausts. Remember in those days images were few & far between & they didn't have a lot to go on. But still, it proved popular staying unchanged until 1977. It re-appeared as a limited edition in USA in 1980 then popped up briefly in the basic range in 1982 in the US series. It also spawned a Rolamatics spin-off called Piston Popper. In late 1982, Lesney sadly went bust. Universal popped up buying up the company & continuing the series. Due to issues at the time, there was a shortage of new castings, so they created some additional castings simply by altering some they already had. One was the Mustang, which received added flares & skirts & turned into IMSA Mustang. It was released in 1983 as MB11 in the US range & MB67 in the ROW range. It only lasted 3 years in the ROW range but carried on until 1996 in the US range. Quite a journey over a quarter of a decade. Pictured is the 1993 issue in orange. Having no worldwide access as is common nowadays it took me a number of years to get my first version. It wasn't until one of my trips to USA that I found a great shade variation to add to my collection. I picked it up at a hobby shop I have been to a few times now called Kiddie Kar Collectibles based in Reading PA. It's always fun visiting the shop as it's like a little treasure trove of models. Each visit lasts for hours. Hopefully one day I will get back there again.
