😊 I want to review a question that I get asked a lot: Is it true that a whole foods, plant-based diet is best for the human body? 🌱 The answer for most of us is absolutely YES! So does this mean that eating meat, dairy, or processed foods will hurt you or make you sick? 🤔 Listen, these foods are demonized because many chronic diseases are partly caused by eating too much of these foods. Not SOME of these foods, TOO MUCH of them. So that leaves us with the question- how much is too much? To be honest, I don’t know. Because I don’t know you! I don’t know what your life is like, how you eat, how you feel, how much you move, or what your labs look like. The answer is different for each of us and is dependent on so many factors, such as your current health status, lifestyle, preferences, genetics, and activity level, to name a few. My point here is that nutrition isn’t so black and white (like my cute top 😉) and treating it as such misses the point completely. The most important thing is knowing yourself, your limits, your needs, and what makes sense for you right now. ✨ Build your diet off that. Build your diet off YOU.

Taco, Taco, Taco! It might not be Tuesday but we were craving these chipotle fish tacos 🌶️🐟🌮 A light dusting in arrowroot powder adds a bit of a crunch to these little bites of tilapia. What are your go-to refreshing summer dishes? .

This cold soba noodle salad is one of our favorites and has been in the rotation for years now. The homemade chili oil is 🔥🔥🔥and it’s just fantastic! Recipe adapted from: @howsweeteats soba noodle salad with caramelized chicken and chili oil. I always add more veggies + went meatless this time by swapping the chicken for edamame and peanuts, but the chicken version is also delish and what I usually make. .

Sunday meal prep.
Every week is different but they all start with a why. This week my why is several longer than usual work days coupled with a broken microwave. My fallback is usually microwaveable veggies and grains for busy weeks but I quickly had to rethink my approach.
.
Starting at the bottom, we’ll be eating beef stew with salad and fruit for dinner tonight and tomorrow. The stew will easily reheat on the stove and I’ll serve with bread to encourage the kids. The salad is a Mediterranean mix from @traderjoes that I also stuck in small jars to go with my lunches of chicken and broccoli, leftovers from a dinner date last night. I have another salad kit to make later in the week for the rest of my lunches. I prepped muffins and fruit/nut bites for breakfast and snacks. And I cooked two small casserole dishes worth of pasta. I’ll pair these with sauces and veggies and bake them the day we eat them. For nights that aren’t planned or that planned dishes go out the window, I have stuff on hand for breakfast for dinner and sandwiches because planning for me is also planning for nights that don’t go quite as planned.

Toddler approved 😉 Kid’s meals don’t have to be fried or filled with sugar. Many times kids will eat whatever they see YOU eat. My little one is a picky eater but I’m still persistent and offer him healthy options, usually we just share a meal like this Grilled Salmon Lunch Special from @cheesecakefactory 🥦 He didn’t like the broccoli but at least he tried it 😜 I just asked to swap the mashed potatoes for brown rice 🍚

One of my most favorite things is weekend brunch with Trav because Trav works most weekends (and weekdays!) so there are very few weekend days we get to spend together. Last night I discovered how easy it is to make quick pickled onions and my life has been ✨changed✨ #soforkingfancy — update: everybody is asking about how they’re made so here ya go! •



First, I used my @theinspiralizer on blade A to spiralize/slice the red onion. Next I combined 1/2 C of apple cider vinegar + 1 Tbsp of sugar + 1 1/2 tsp of salt + 1 cup of water. Put the onion in a mason jar and pour the brine in. Let sit for at least 1 hour. That’s it! 💗 I found the recipe on @bonappetitmag

No I’m not pregnant. Just hella bloated and kind of nauseous right now. 🤢

Wondering what happened? Yeah me too.
.
This digestive upset randomly came on after lunch. I ate leftover homemade chicken and potatoes and about an hour later my belly blew up. Right now I’m laying in bed feeling gassy and very uncomfortable. (TMI?)
.
I do tend to have a sensitive gut. I’ve never been diagnosed with IBS, and I usually feel digestively pretty good if I’m eating well 90% of the time. But my digestion is one of the biggest reasons I follow a “real food” diet most of the time. And it’s why I can be a little anal about the quality of food I eat especially when I’m away from home.
.
I have a few ideas about what might have happened today. Maybe I indulged too much eating out twice this weekend. Maybe I got food poisoning. Maybe my stomach didn’t appreciate the coffee I had at church. Maybe I should have thrown out those leftovers instead of eating them. Maybe this is all due to how stressful this weekend has been. I truly have NO clue why I’m sick right now.
.
I can make some guesses... but I’ll never know for certain what has actually caused me to feel like s*** this afternoon. 😣
.
Part of learning what works and what doesn’t work for your body is accepting that sometimes you’ll make mistakes.
.
That sometimes you can do your best and still experience symptoms.
.
And that ultimately you don’t have 100% control over your body.
.
So even though this isn’t a glamorous shot, I’m hoping it shows you that even those of us who have a good handle on this “eat healthy real food but also live your life thing” don’t feel perfect all the time either.
.
Perfection isn’t the point. And you’ll never learn anything about your body if you let the fear of failure or a bad outcome prevent you from trying something new.
.
And finally, I can’t say this enough... YOU ARE NOT IN TOTAL CONTROL OF YOUR BODY.
.
Stuff like this happens and all you can do is chug some pepto bismol, rub some essential oils on your tummy, lay down, and ride it out. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Is there a food that when you eat it, it makes you think of a person or place? For me, peaches always make me think of our annual family trips to the Jersey Shore (Southern Jersey in Avalon and Stone Harbor). We always have peaches there... from the roadside stand or the local market. Always delicious and juicy 🍑 As I eat this peach sitting here at my kitchen table in Cincinnati, I am thinking of the sunshine and ocean waves of the beach 🏖️ 🌊

Sunday brunching with the gang. And by gang I mean avocado and pesto egg toast! I'm not really one for meal prepping, but one thing I love to have for the week is pesto. (Is there anything that pesto isn't good on??) If you've never tried homemade, trust me, it is so infinitely better than store-bought. Go make some today and have it all week long for yumminess 😋

So, I got this question in my IG stories, and it’s so common that I thought I would address it here for you, too!

Your body actually needs MORE calories before your period in order to keep your corpus luteum making progesterone (that’s a good thing)! It also goes through B vitamins pretty quickly to make that progesterone…and you know what’s a great source of B vitamins? Grains & starchy vegetables!

Additionally, it is believed that your body becomes more sensitive to insulin during the luteal phase. This means you’re using the carbs you eat more efficiently, and if your blood sugar is lower than normal, it will make you want to raise that…by eating carbs!
*
So…listen to your body! If you’re hungry, eat! And if it seems like you’re craving carbs more than usual, give your body what it needs! It’s far better to include things like brown rice, quinoa, potatoes & sweet potatoes than to ignore your cravings and try to stick to a low-carb diet…only to later binge on cookies or ice cream!

Late dinner and late night means sleeping in. Allowing rest is super important for self care.
I wasn’t exactly hungry when I woke up.
Had coffee ☕️ of course and a banana with peanut butter, which was all I wanted. It’s important to tune into our innate cues that tell us exactly what we need at the time.

First #PancakeSunday where I haven’t been the pancake chef in a looong time. These quinoa 🥞 are fluffier than you could dream a quinoa pancake to be and are concealing lots of dark 🍫 chip goodness (and there’s leftovers for later). 😈 Seitan is becoming more popular as a vegan alternative to chicken & meat, but how does it compare nutritionally? 🤔
.
🍞 It is made by kneading wheat dough, then rinsing this to remove the wheat starch so that you are left with pure gluten, which is then usually flavoured with ingredients like: garlic, soy sauce, sugar and spices before cooking.
.
🌾 As seitan is pure wheat gluten it isn’t suitable for those with coeliac disease, but it is soy-free.
.
🐮 Seitan is high in protein - depending on how it is made 100g of seitan contains around 16 - 25g of protein, which is similar to the amount of protein in a small chicken breast or 3-4 slices of beef
. 🥜 But the protein found in seitan is not a ‘complete protein’ as it doesn’t contain any lysine which is an essential amino acid for our health (beans, lentils & peanuts are good vegan sources of lysine).
.
🔬 Seitan is also quite low in calories (~100kcal per 100g); contains a moderate amount of selenium, phosphorus and iron; a small amount of carbs (~9g per 100g); and almost no fat.
. 😈 Pre-made seitan can be high in salt depending on what types of seasonings are added for flavour - so it can be a good idea to check the salt level on the label.

⭐️ My verdict: I really like seitan, it is a tasty plant based meat alternative and nutritionally it is quite similar to animal based protein sources like chicken & beef.

One question I get a lot is do you eat out every single day? The answer is no! While I do eat out a lot, especially so I can share content with you guys, there are days where I eat all my food that is meal prepped! Life is all about balance. Lunch: 3 cups of Chinese salad with rotisserie chicken, wontons, shredded carrots, 1/2 avocado, and topped with sesame ginger dressing
Snack: honey crisp apple and 2 hard boiled eggs
Dinner: zucchini noodles with Alfredo sauce, 5 oz grilled chicken breast, chopped tomatoes, and Parmesan

While in Montana last week, I tried a lot of huckleberry items. Let's see, we had a huckleberry milkshake, huckleberry pie with huckleberry ice cream, huckleberry cheesecake, and a huckleberry mountain (I think it was called) that was essentially a giant brownie sundae with huckleberry ice cream. Also had fresh huckleberries on the way out of town (not pictured). #everythinginmoderation #weshared ☺️

Most mornings breakfast is a protein shake then a bit later 2 hard boiled eggs and some fruit. I’m up and out of the door too early to deal with making breakfast, so I typically choose easy to take with me Foods. The weekends however are a different story. Getting those veggies in! Dock Breakfast 👌
Savoring every minute of summer including meals outdoors as much as possible. Over the years as a dietitian/ mom, I've experimented quite a bit with exactly how much I can alter a recipe (by adding extra fiber) before the kids will notice/ pout/ break a tooth off if the texture becomes too hard🤣. These pancakes were still fluffy and acceptable with the addition of chia seeds, whole wheat flour and hemp.
Dry ingredients:
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
1 tbs chia seeds
1 tbs hemp hearts
1/2 tbsp baking powder
Wet ingredients:
1/2 cup milk of choice
1/2 tbsp oil
1 egg
Combine wet and dry ingredients separately before pouring 1/2 the batter on a greased frying pan. Makes 2 large pancakes. I enjoyed mine with strawberries, plain Greek yogurt and maple syrup. .
