☕️Rapid fat loss protocols do have a time and place within a well designed nutrition plan. I use them sporadically with a fistful of online coaching clients depending on their relationship with food (I won't do it with anyone with disordered eating habits) as well as their current goals.

🦄HOWEVER, each and every client who begins a rapid fat loss protocol with me knows they are NOT the end-all-be-all. They are not a quick fix. And once it's finished you will need to switch to something more sustainable so you can continue making progress and maintain your weight loss long-term.

☕️All that said, the point of this post is not to defend rapid fat loss protocols. Rather it's to highlight the importance of understanding *real progress takes a ton of time and effort*.

🦄There is no 21 day fix. There is no pill or potion or humdinger or doodad that will burn fat and keep it off for life. There is no fast track to success.

☕️This whole "fitness thing" is a life long process. No matter how lean or strong or defined you get...there's always room to improve. There's always more to learn. And there's always space to get better.

🦄People run into issues when they think, "I'll be happy when..." or "I'll love myself when..."

☕️No. That's not how this works. If you don't love who you are right now, you aren't going to love who you are when you have a 6-pack, get rid of some cellulite, or lose 20lbs.

🦄Strap in. Buckle up. Enjoy the ride because once you begin, you're in it for life. Might as well prepare for the long haul and have fun along the way. Because, if you aren't having fun, what's the point?

How to Implement I.F.

So I told you a little bit about the befits of IF and now I’m going to tell you how to implement it!

It’s honestly super simple, and makes my mornings much easier! Pick how many hours your want to fast I usually recommend starting with 14 hours and working your way up to 18 hours. That would mean if you stop eating at 8pm don’t eat again until 10am and gradually work up to delaying your first meal until 2pm. .
I like to fill my fasting time with black coffee (or sweetened with a little stevia) and/or tea. Plus tons of water, especially sparkling water because it can help fill you up!

One of the reasons I love ❤️ protein shakes (or protein smoothies) is because you can completely customize the taste and macronutrients based on the ingredients you use, and prefer.

This is HUGE 🙌🏼 because you can literally consume the same amount of food (the same volume of food) and have a dramatically different total number of calories in each shake. 🤯

Why this is important from a practical fitness perspective is because you can fill yourself up while working towards fat loss, or you can ramp up the calories in your shake for when you’re in a muscle building phase.

Are you actually saving calories by picking the “healthier” milk alternative? 🍼

Nowadays dairy free milks are available in all shops to buy and also have been made available in most coffee shops ☕️ This is great progress as it makes dairy free options available for people with allergies 👍🏼 and also provides others without allergies more choice 🙌🏼

However...it seems to be a common belief that because the milk is dairy free, it is automatically more “healthy”🙅🏼‍♀️

The picture above shows how the calories and macros vary in a medium latte depending on what milk you choose 🍼 The arrows represent the drinks becoming more calorific as you progress around ⤴️⤵️ .

Other than almond milk (sugar free at that), skimmed milk is lower in calories and higher in protein than dairy free milk...So unless you: 1. Prefer the taste of a dairy free milk 😋; 2. Are intolerant to dairy due to gastrointestinal issues 🚽; 3. Are allergic to dairy 🍼🙅🏼‍♀️ or 4. Are vegan....Skimmed milk is probably a better option if you are wanting to opt for a lower calorie coffee ☕️🍼

📍 HOW LIQUID CALORIES RUIN YOUR FAT LOSS 📍

People often don’t count liquids, either because they forget, or they don’t think they are high in calories. However, many drinks have a lot of calories, mostly from sugar, and can easily ruin your fat loss. 👉

Let’s say your maintenance calories are 2400. That means that, if you want to lose fat you should be in calorie deficit (eating less calories than your maintenance). Now, what many people do is counting all the food they ate, but not counting liquids. If said person ate 2200 calories, but also drank 1 glass of orange juice (120 calories) and a bottle of cola (220 calories), he/she is actually going to be in caloric surplus, their total calories for the day being 2540. 👇

See how liquid calories can easily ruin your diet? Many people don’t even know they should count them, but they add up a lot of calories, and this can result in maintaining your weight, or even gaining some. 🙄

Solution for this is easy: replace high calorie sodas with diet soda or flavored water, or just drink regular water if you don’t have cravings for soda. Sure, you can still drink soda and count calories from it, but is it really worth extra calories? 🤔

TransPHORMation Tips

Real Food.
As much as you can while still burning fat.
As little as you can while promoting lean mass.
Lots of plants.

Remove as much of the refined starches, added sugars and energy dense processed foods as possible.

While fats are good and needed in a fat loss journey, limit intake of certain fats (saturated fats) and try for a complete avoidance of trans fats.

But as I said... Fats are needed. So increase consumption of healthy monounsaturated fats (EVOO, nuts, nut butters, salmon, avocados, etc.) You must be eating enough whole lean protein to produce protein synthesis. Increase consumption of lean meats like poultry, fish, and other seafood.

Increase consumption of whole plant-based foods (fruits and veggies). Get protein from these sources as well, just realize that most plant based proteins are not full spectrum on the Amino Acid spectrum.

I am all about the “if it fits your macros” (IIFYM) lifestyle, but I also think that the importance of micronutrients should not be overlooked. .
Sure, you can lose weight eating fast food all day long if you’re hurting your macros in a caloric deficit, but it’s not even close to being optimal for your health. .
That’s where micronutrients come into play. These are all of the vitamins and minerals that our bodies need in order to perform as best we can. We consume these from our foods, primarily whole natural foods such as fruits and vegetables (as well as some nutrients from meat, while grains, etc.). But the problem is that most of us do not consume nearly enough of these nutrients per day, leading to a compromised immune system, delayed recovery, fatigue, and all kinds of unpleasant stuff. .
So what can you do? - First, prioritize eating fruits and veggies. Aim for multiple servings of each per day (especially of veggies) and try to get a variety. Cheaper ways of doing this include buying fruits and vegetables that are in season as well as buying frozen fruits and vegetables. 🍓🥦

I’m all for counting calories and tracking food — especially for someone who’s just getting started or wants to maximize the accuracy of their diet.

Reason being, it’s the best way to learn (and memorize) proper portion sizes and, really, the only sure way of knowing that you’re consistently eating in a calorie deficit.

But(t🍑), there comes a time in every fitness enthusiast’s life when they’re no longer focused on losing weight. Instead, they’re just looking to maintain a healthy body.

At that point, strict calorie counting just isn’t necessary for most people.

There should always be some structure, though, which is where having a few “fat loss rules to live by” comes in handy. These are rules that help you keep your calorie intake in check without having to religiously count or track ‘em.

Now, everyone’s different, but these four are perfect for me, and I implement them on a regular basis.

1. Never Miss Twice ✌️- this one’s fantabulous because it allows for “fun” meals, but keeps me focused on eating nutritious foods the majority of the time.

2. Protein & Veggies 🍖🥗 - if you’re eating lots of protein and veggies, there’s a good chance you’re not over-consuming calories. Plus, protein and veggies help keep you full and satisfied.

3. The One Plate Rule 🍽️ - when you find yourself in a situation where there’s a lot of tempting foods (like a buffet or party), this rule can help. With it, you can have whatever you one, but it MUST fit on a single plate. I’d also try and keep each new food to ONE scoop/serving.

I’ve always been a fan of metaphors and this one by @nate_miyaki is a great one to understand carbs.
-
The great carb debate is real. On one hand you have people saying you just steer clear and on the other you have people who swear by them.
-
Like most things, the truth is somewhere in the middle.
-
If building muscle is your priority, you’re going to want to consume more carbs. Not to say that you can’t build muscle without them.
-
If fat loss is your priority, you may want to consume less carbs or cut them out altogether. Again, not to say you can’t lose fat while still consuming carbohydrates.
-
If your goal is to build muscle AND lose fat simultaneously, I have always found the greatest success by timing my carbs around my workouts. ie. fueling my car up before my drive and then topping off the tank afterwards.

Of course there’s more that goes into carbs than this (namely insulin sensitivity which Nate goes on to talk about later in the article) but I thought this was too good not to share.

First of all can we talk about my pink glasses from Ikea? I bought only 6 because that’s how many they had and I’ve broken two!!! Coca-Cola vs Naked smoothie. Surely the naked smoothie is healthy, right? Well it has more nutrients, of that there is no doubt. But is it actually better for you? Let’s look at the bigger picture.

The smoothie has more sugar. Sugar is not inherently bad, but 41g of sugar per 375ml (50g per 450ml bottle) is a huge consumption for a ‘healthy’ source of hydration/nutrients. The smoothie is also higher in calories. Calories are not inherently bad, but 202 calories from a drink is a bit of a waste. P.s. the Coca-Cola is just as bad in both facets.

The fundamental question here is; why are you consuming either? I’d assume you’d consume the Coca-Cola for taste, but the smoothie for ‘health’. -

Whilst the smoothie has a load of sugar, it has WAY more nutrients than the Coca-Cola, credit where credit is due. But is this a viable, long term means to consume nutrients for the average person? I wouldn’t say so.

If you are looking to take in more nutrients, isn’t it a better idea to eat them? Prepare meals with vegetables and fruits? Consume them normally instead of unknowingly binging on them in smoothies, resulting in unnecessary amounts of sugar (and calories) being consumed. You shouldn’t need to get most of your nutrients from one single drink.

So is the Smoothie better than the Coca-Cola? If you’re whole diet is already supporting a nutrient dense intake of foods, my answer would be NO. You shouldn’t need it.

Hydrate on water/zero cal flavoured water, eat plenty of whole foods and be aware of calories and nutrients consumed. -

💬 DO YOU EAT BREAKFAST?

🍳 There's a huge difference between healthiness in terms of micronutrients and healthy in terms of something being weight-loss friendly...

🥓 Unfortunately, a classic go-to breakfast for many, as shown on the left, is neither one 😳

🥞 When opting for an overall "healthy" breakfast, I'd advise the following👇🏼:

🔑 Include some foods high in vitamins & minerals

🔑 Have a main source of protein

🔑 Try not to go overboard on carbs/fats, but whether or not you do, be sure to factor them into your macros for the day

🔑 Aim for the carbs you DO eat to be complex instead of simple (wheat bread over white, for example)

👉🏼 No need to comment if you don't eat breakfast 😂 That's fine. At the end of the day, if your goal is weight loss, be in a calorie deficit, if your goal is weight gain, be in a surplus, and either way, get the bulk of your calories from nutrient-dense sources 🍓✌🏼

Never ever believe anyone who tells you otherwise!! Even dietitians. There's no such things as fat burning foods, not even chilli, black pepper, ginger, apple vinegar, coconut oil or any other food that pops into your mind.
If these were indeed fat burning, then no one would ever struggle with obesity!! Only fat burning quantities.
Nutrition made simple:
🔹 If you consume more calories than your energy expenditures a day, you will gain weight.
🔹 If you consume less calories than your energy expenditure a day, with the appropriate distribution of macronutrients, you will lose weight.
