The sleeping habits of CEOs and founders are revealing in many ways, but the biggest takeaway is this: Most of them work a lot. That’s little surprise when you consider the fact that, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, even the average full-time worker spends about 8.5 hours at work on a weekday (and 5.4 hours when they work on the weekend). But there are the rare exceptions — the CEOs who believe in limiting the time they and their employees spend working each day.⠀

Some CEOs simply work shorter days, while others try to mandate a four-day workweek. In Sweden, for example, some tech startups have effectively instituted a six-hour workday, and a company in New Zealand that experimented with a four-day workweek found it boosted productivity. Stephan Aarstol tried the former at his company, lifestyle brand Tower. After a year of testing out a five-hour workday, he opted to make it a company-wide policy. “Being a beach lifestyle company, where our whole brand is wrapped up in the notion of a healthy work-life balance, the idea that we should be working differently, too, if we truly wanted to live differently, wasn’t as much of a leap,” he wrote on Fast Company.⠀

Across the U.S., Nielsen estimates that a new product hits the shelves approximately every two minutes. That’s an impressive amount of bait being cast, but the bottom line across the consumer packaged goods (CPG) landscape has little to show in return. Product consumption is at a standstill in our industry, and unit volume sales in the U.S. are flat year-over-year. So something isn’t adding up.⠀

In the need for speed, some manufacturers and retailers have lost touch with the fundamentals of successful new product development. Drawing examples from the booming beverages category (up 6% in sales across U.S. outlets this year), here are three reasons why innovation performance has fallen short in CPG:⠀

YOUR AD SPEND CAN’T BUY YOU LOYALTY ⚙️ When you think about marketing, you’d be hard-pressed to think of a more desired outcome than consumer loyalty. Loyalty has always been a treasured commodity, but now that consumers have anything and everything they desire at their fingertips, it’s far less prevalent than it used to be. In fact, 46% of global consumers say they’re more likely to try new brands than they were just five years ago.

In some respects, traditional advertising efforts do some good in fighting off disloyalty. The U.S. and Europe account for approximately 80% of the Nielsen-estimated worldwide ad budget, and consumers in these two regions are the least open to trying new things. But marketers need to understand that consumers don’t want to be bombarded with corporate messages. In the U.S., for example, 67% of consumers say they’re more overwhelmed by ads than they were five years ago. That tells us that we could be nearing a breaking point—the point at which advertising stops having a positive effect on consumption.

ROGER FIDLER IS A FOREFATHER of digital journalism. In the early 1980s, he wrote and illustrated an essay on the future of news. When Fidler presented his ideas around Knight Ridder, his co-workers sometimes laughed. “It was not quite like Roger had descended from another planet,” a colleague of his once told me, “but he was saying some things that were simply very hard to believe at the time.”

The idea he spoke of most was one Steve Jobs would have many years later—a tablet on which to read electronic newspapers. Fidler’s design and execution of a prototype were so similar to the eventual iPad that when Apple sued Samsung over design infringements, Samsung used Fidler’s early device to argue the idea was in the public domain.

In Fidler’s vision of the future, news and information were headed to the nascent internet, where stories would be instantly published from one computer to millions more, eliminating the need to operate an expensive press run by expensive workers. A tablet, he thought, was the perfect device to replace paper. Readers could click on boxes that revealed data or more information about a particular subject. Advertisers could produce immersive, interactive ads. And the tablet could be slipped into a briefcase or bag. Fidler was right, of course. Apple has sold several hundred million iPads, and more than a billion phones that serve much the same purpose.

Now, Fidler wonders if he was wrong. “I have come to realize that replicating print in a digital device is much more difficult than what anybody, including me, imagined,”
