Dead Right (2011)
After scheduling conflicts delayed the original version of “Dead Right” starring Chris Cairo and Ray Revello, Daryl recast the lead role of Deke Trenton with Michael Martin and Dollars & Donuts was reborn! Michael’s real-life brother Mitchell Martin took over as Deke’s brother Bennie, and Cairo was shifted over to villainous pimp Sweet William. “Dead Right” was the first film to carry the newly designed Walker logo, announcing to all that this was an elegant, more refined Dollars & Donuts ready to be taken seriously.
The screenplay was written by Hank Della and was named after the original title for 1971’s “Dirty Harry.” The crew made it a point to shoot in some of the same locations as that classic film, mimicking the shots as best they could in the same San Francisco alleys that Clint Eastwood once stalked. The parallels didn’t end there, “Dead Right” premiered at the Blue Light bar on December 22, 2011 on the 40th anniversary of the “Dirty Harry” San Francisco premiere.
Zeiss cinema lenses, ARRI lights, and dolly tracks helped elevate the professional atmosphere on set. Hell, just the fact that there actually WAS a set was a big deal! The crew was able to borrow a large space from a mall that was under construction in Foster City to create Sweet William’s hideout. They stayed up all night smashing through walls and spraying blood on the floor to get the climactic fight scene finished. Among the other improvements was the crew’s first original score, composed brilliantly by Arbel Bedak @arbelicious
Dollars & Donuts mainstay Lorenzo Ocon is killed off in the first scene after getting his eyeballs cut out, and newcomers include Emmanuel Diego, Ryan Wahlstrom, Del Lostaunau, Katie Greggans, and Robyn Von Lee. Daryl’s uncle Ed Kayser makes his first appearance as a homeless bum, soon to be made a star of “Oldtimers.” “Dead Right” relaunched Dollars & Donuts Productions with a confidence and filmmaking fervor that carries on to the present.
