...correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought that while a person is behind a till ‘customer service’ means you speak to the customers, it does not mean you have a 3way conversation to your colleagues across the tills, while pretty much blanking your customers when they are stood in front of you!
An elderly gentleman in front of me was greeted with a half hearted “hello”, ignored while packing his items (he continued to smile), asked for the money, ignored while he tried to get the correct change, then dismissed with a halfhearted goodbye (he still smiled bless him). After having queued and subjected to listen to the 3 colleagues have a good old chin wag about this and that (ok some was work related, so what?!) and having witnessed the elderly gentleman ignored and not even asked if he needed help to pack his bag (so what if he only had 3 or 4 items!), I decided something needed to be said!
Yes I had a polite word with the women who barely served me, yes she looked at me angrily and yes she decided to ignore my comments (which I said loud enough for all 3 tills worth of customers to hear) for her to then proceed to say “goodbye” and turn away!
On leaving the shop I had 4 people say “well said” or something similar, but although I was pleased my comments were noted by other customers, I was saddened at the fact that was probably a daily occurrence in that shop and that these customers were subjected to this mannerism from staff!
What is wrong with the world?! And don’t say it’s because of their age (really bugs me when people use age as an excuse)...because they weren’t, they were all older than myself!
A smile, a polite hello, a short conversation and a just little engagement with the person in front of you is just common curtesy and it can really make or break someone’s experience or even their day. By all means go on your break and have a moan or when you go home, we all do it, but don’t do it in front of customers and don’t ignore us! ...aaaaaand I’m done #customerservice #bepolite #engage #meetandgreet #smile #conversation #communication #badexperience #stress #liddl #supermarket #disapointed
