One of the biggest question marks for the Dodgers this offseason is the catching situation. Though the Dodgers offered a $17.9 million qualifying offer to Yasmani Grandal last week, we’ve yet to hear if he’ll accept or deny it. Grandal had an atrocious postseason, and hit just .241 in the regular season. But, he is an elite pitch framer with an above average arm, despite his playoff struggles.
If Grandal were to opt out into free agency, which is likely, the Dodgers could stick with what they already have in Austin Barnes, who took over the starting catching role this October. But he had just a .205 average this season, and has a career .459 OPS in the postseason, even worse than Grandal’s. The Dodgers also have catching prospects in Will Smith, Keibert Ruiz, and Diego Cartaya, but none of them are ready for the major league level.
So where does that leave us? Well, the Dodgers could trade for a better catcher, like JT Realmuto. He hit .277 this season with 21 home runs and 74 RBI. Offensively, Realmuto has the edge over Grandal, and they’re both pretty similar defensively. So what do you think? Should the Dodgers stick with what they’ve got, or spend some money and go after something better? 🤔
