Tip Tuesday! Do you and your pet dress up together, but only one of you enjoys it? Try this one on for size (pun intended 😜): ⠀
Most dogs aren't accustomed to wearing anything around their neck, body, and face. In fact, most puppies have to be properly conditioned to wearing something as simple as a leash! For this week's tip, start your pup young (but if you've got an older pup, it's never too late to start), and work on handling! ⠀
Handling exercises come in all shapes and sizes with the main goal between them being to have dogs more accustomed to being touched in areas they may prefer you to avoid, such as: ears, muzzle, paws, and tail. Handling also comes in "handy" to prepare your dog to be around children, a basic vet exam, teeth brushing, muzzle conditioning, and, least importantly, for having them wear cute clothes. That last one is pretty silly, but I gotta say, I do love a tolerant dog.⠀
To get started, gather up a few of your dog's favorite treats. Feed each treat individually from your hand, and while you pup is eating, pet him/her on the less desirable areas (ears are usually a great place to start). This is called conditioning. If every time you go to pet your dog's ears he also gets an awesome treat, he'll be much more enthusiastic for you to pet him everywhere, building trust and confidence in your relationship.
