Weather was bad today so I ran inside on the treadmill and throwing it back with this picture from after a run with Allie last summer!
We adopted Allie from @rockymountainlabrescue in June of last year. She was always so affectionate with us and other people, but we noticed pretty quickly the extent of her behavior issues. Within a few weeks, she had learned to jump the fence and had attacked some other dogs.
It was HORRIBLE. We loved her, but with every instance of her issues I got more overwhelmed about all the work ahead for us. Within months we had her in a training program that helped us to learn how to best manage her.
In the meantime, though, I ran with her -- up to 40 miles a week -- and found that it was one of the best ways to keep her calm and controllable.
It was all great until she got diagnosed with heart worm in November (she contracted it before she got rescued). For the last 6 months we've been trying to manage her without exercise. Thanks to sedatives and new anti-anxiety drugs for her, we've been able to survive but as of Friday SHE CAN RUN WITH ME AGAIN!! So excited to have my little buddy back with me again and thankful to have her healthy. 🙏
Heart worm is fatal if not treated and expensive and stressful to treat, so make sure to give your dogs heart worm preventative, friends! ✌️ And stay tuned for more Allie pics! ☺️
