“The deepest urge in human nature is the desire to be important” - Dr. John Dewey
I’m not sure another quote exists that better explains the largest challenge most managers, supervisors, or leaders face today. People want to feel important. Young, old, experienced, green, black, white - anyone that shows up to work, deep down wants to feel important. .
The hardest thing as a leader is to make everyone feel important. The tough truth is that some people are more important to a team or organization - it’s just truth. But the goal is to make each person on the team FEEL important in their role. It’s crazy to see how much someone’s attitude and work ethic changes when they feel important, no matter the size of their role. I ran across this quote in one of Carnegie’s books and I’m glad I did because it’s a great reminder and one of my new favorites.
