By the year 2050 there will be more plastic floating in the oceans than fish. It is estimated that 1/3 of the worlds entire population, over 2.5 billion people, is dependent on fish as a main source of food. These people live off fish and they don't have a Sobey's around the corner or any alternatives. Without fish...what will they eat?
Microplastics, tiny pieces of polymers are ingested by aquatic animals and travel up the food chain. These filaments have no nutrients and unknowingly are filling the little bellies of animals that swim, those fish are eaten by bigger fish, caught and eaten by us.
I use to love watching Betta fish in the pet store that swam in tiny glasses near the cash register as a kid. The confinement upset me and imagined them being free in the ocean....Now the ocean is their confinement because they are surrounded by plastic.
The ring illustrated is what remains on a plastic bottle once the lid is removed. It's a safety mechanism that shows a bottle hasn't been opened. Those rings, if unbroken, can be nasty traps to sea turtles or any fish that is caught in them when they are small. As they develop and grow the ring remains and their bodies grow around it.
I've digitally altered the second illustration. I'm not sure what I like more... I might draw a second fish in that blank area facing the other but I'm not too sure yet. Definitely changing the shadow to something more simple.
Any feedback would be helpful! Thanks
Anyways, I had fun with a ballpoint pen to render the water - it's been a while!
