Potter’s Cider Noveau – Sapling Series
750 ml 9% ABV
$14.99 Union Market, Richmond, VA
Rank Overall: 8th/29 Rose: 1st/7
This is Potter’s Cider Noveau from their Sapling Series. It is a modern rose cider that utilizes the skins of petit verdot and merlot wine grapes during fermentation. The cider is then aged in a French oak barrel for 4 months.
The color is a dark burgundy but a touch lighter from your typical red wine.
Carbonation level is light/moderate that dissipates relatively quick as the cider warms in the glass.
Aromas include red wine, sweet grapes, hints of warmth, lavender, and vanilla.
There’s obvious heavy notes of red wine but without the heat of high alcohol that most red wines include. The lack of heat draws me to want more. There’s a moderate amount of acidity of tart raspberries. On the finish there’s heavy tannins that linger forever.
As most red wines, I believe the best time to drink this would be during the fall/winter. It does provide some notes of warmth.
I believe this would be best paired with chicken and lightly spiced red meats.
I may buy this again down the road. I would need to be in the mood for this one or to be around wine drinkers to share it with. I would certainly drink it again, but I may not pursue with other options present.
I think this is an interesting cider. It was an easy review with most notes of aromas and taste very present and definable. As stated above it provides a lot of wine flavor without the heat of alcohol. For this reason, I really enjoyed it. It sits at an average value at $15 for a 750 ml bottle. At the time of this review I ranked it as the best Rosé and #8 overall.
